BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

Jason Bully and I are building some pretty similar hobbits together so I thought I’d post a build thread for once and maybe it will inspire me to actually document this thing now that I’m getting closer to the finish line.

I’ve been building this dumb Hobbit for a while now, using various used parts I got off other bikes and trades but also some really expensive treats orders.

I wanted a shiny black and gold bike that keeps most of the stock hobbit trim (floorboards, side covers, tool tray, rack, fender, event the dumb plastic coil cover) but also the maximum performance parts I could fit. I do not like stock hobbit suspension or headlight bucket so that’s where I drew the line on the stock look.

Still in the building and spec stages and no performance or tuning steps have been taken, so I don’t have the clutch springs or jetting or variator weights even close to dialed in yet. Currently concentrated on cleaning, rebuilding, and polishing the old stock aluminum parts so they look new and replacing all the old rubber parts like the fender and tank mount grommets etc.

Re: BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

aw yeahhhhh

i was wondering when that engine would pop up.

did i give you one of those big fin hobbit heads to test on this thing?

Re: BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

Hey Graham,

Yeah I sent you a big fin head with the cases way back when this project was just an engine case and a used kit.

At the time i thought I was working with a Parmakit because it was so crusty and i couldn't see any markings on it. So you cut me a rad 46mm squish on the big fin head (which is now very happily running on a wizard kit on my other hobbit) but literally years later I discovered that I was actually working with an old version of the Athena 47.6, which is why I had to opt for the Puchonda head with the larger squish diameter.

Totally my bad :)

Re: BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

no groms no blasters /

make moped builds pay attention to appearance again

thank you for your service

Badd Habbits 2020!

That’s some good details there. I will not be doing the same because then I’ll have more of an idea of how much money and time I’ve wasted... But here’s a pic of my Badd Habbit

Yes!!! I was waiting to see what was going to come out of the”good” hobbit part collection phase!

Re: BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

This is one of those builds that takes so long to complete that it's guaranteed to seize on first startup

Re: BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

Emil Kniemel /

Why are do you think the 290mm shocks are too long? Is it because the crazy rear fender clearance? I think hobbit rear fenders just mount like that (aka ugly).

I think you might better off mounting it a la Neil Burgess:

(can't find a good picture)

or rocking the Simon Earley chop that makes it flow nice:

If it has nothing to do with the fender then nevermind.

Re: BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

Yeah dude you nailed it! I hate how high the fender wangs up in the air. Really digging that Neil Burgess style tho, especially since I want to rock the stock tail light etc. Thanks for that! Also saw somebody on FB with a rigid tail that was super low that I really liked, although I don't know if I wanna go the rigid strut route on a stock subframe. Was hoping these shocks would be low enough but no dice.

hah, nice!

when I cut the motormounts to make a swung motor on my safari, I spaced it so the whole thing could just bolt into the hobbit factory pivot mount. I think it's even got the proper offset, but haven't actually tested.

Re: BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

For sexy looks I was going to suggest the pull start kit for HPI mini rotor but I see you have the one way roller bearing.

Sigh.

But wait! You have the Cheetahchrome modded subframe?

Unsigh

Yup! You won the "great hobbit subframe wars" of 2015-16 for me since yours allow for the side covers to attach. MLM and 77 etc seemed to be developing theirs solely based on rigidity and durability, which I totally respect, but it didn't match what I was going for stylistically

Re: BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

Yes I would not want to cover up a beautifully custom built 265.00 anodized subframe with plastic covers

Re: BADD HABBITS 2019 BUILD THREAD - boyd edition

Did some testing on the Badd Habbits Camino front disc mod and couldn’t be happier. Installed everything and centeredish the wheel without any issues. Stops me and the moped no problemo and stays put without damaging those hard to find wheels.
