odyssey with an Odyssey

Brought this rusty thing home and since it sat for so long I squirted some penetrating oil in the cylinder to limber things up. After putting the spark plug back in and pedaling it I thought I heard a pop. It does have good spark so then I squirted some gas down the plug hole and it started right up and ran for a few seconds. So this may be a somewhat less involved restoration than originally perceived. It is a bit of a mystery as you can see by the VIN plate which matches the foot trim. But the clutch is not a 2 speed. You'd think with only 365 miles on it, it would still have the original set-up. So I'm looking for some ideas / explanations from those of you that have been around mopeds for longer than I.

Also working on tank preservation. Coated the outside with phosphoric acid/dichromate mixture which turns iron oxide ( rust) into iron phosphate which hardens and is paintable. Cleans up with water. Inside of tank is nice. Other than blowing it out with compressed air we're good to go.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Nice bike, not many folks preserve these because there are no performance parts off the shelf for it. but they are well engineered and very reliable.

It is not the cutch that would be a 2 speed, it is the driven pulley that has a planetary gear system built into it.

I just dont see them, only ever acquired 1. I could tell they were quality machines but they are odd-balls to track parts down for.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Careful tuning, porting and derestriction can get some pretty good power from them without removing reliability. Just no kits to slap on them...

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Myron's has a good write up on them.

Myron's solo engine

I've seen gasket sets on German eBay but not much else for parts floating around.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Got some tires and a headlight switch and a generic taillight coming to get this rideable this winter. I like that Myrons link. Hope his info never goes away. I never have been interested in kits or higher performance stuff for any of my bikes other than sometimes a less restrictive air cleaner. I just like the nearly stock set-ups even if they only go 29 mph. Also I have the cylinder head coolant fill plug soaking in my favorite penetrating oil before I attempt to remove it. After treating some of the other rust spots I tried some paint left over from another project and it just so happens that Navistar 4421 (school bus yellow!!) is a perfect match for this color.

Great you are getting it going!

Who cares if there are performance parts or not, not everyone needs to mod their bikes but there are things you can do it you want more performance out of it such as mill the head down and what Rebel Moby said.

Get it going and have fun with it!

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Indeed - just cleaning everything up, a little derestricting and match porting intake, transfer lead ins and exhause will make a good difference AND you will know you have reliability to ride all day long and into the night.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

A 2 spd pulley just popped up on buy/sell if you are looking for one.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

That things sweet bro

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

once u get it going you'll gladly notice how torquey it is and that the motor swings, variator over all.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

From Myron's info here's what my 40/2-R means: 40/2 is 29mph engine ( Type 255 engine somehow tweaked from 255 engine that only goes 25 mph- possibly slightly higher RPM limit). R is regular transmission NOT the 2 speed. There are different cables and an anti-back pedal mechanism on pedal sprocket for the 2 speed, beside the obvious pulley difference; none of which mine has, so mine is correct as a single speed with slightly faster engine. That's what I like about this hobby- always something new to learn and to share it with anybody that is interested.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

oops my bad its a single speed, ive got a columbia w solo motor that variates. the 255 has the third boost port.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

I think I may have found the reason for not using this moped whenever it was parked. The clutch has no movement when I squeeze the handle. In taking it apart I think there is another spoked pressure plate that should go on top of #4. I have a new disc coming because of the broken ear and have reached out to some others but I believe this needs to seen by anyone interested because I think it's a standard Laura M48 engine/clutch. Any input sincerely appreciated as other work on the bike is progressing. When assembled with shown parts plate #1 compresses everything leaving no spring tension to operate the clutch. I have studied Myron's Pages relentlessly to arrive at the conclusion something is missing.

Your number to plate is bent if the keyway in the center of your Hub is good all you have to do is find a piece of metal like a tube or a pipe that's the right thing at diameter so that you can whack it with a mallet and reform it so it's out farther it happens when the clutch is where and nobody notices and they keep on gripping the handle Tighter and Tighter and they take up the slack on the stretched cable if you do need one I do have one I have everything except for that Central hub I have it but the key way is Sheera

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Examine the center hole of #4 very carefully. 9 out of 10 the center is stripped so that it wont lock onto the crankshafts "Double D".

If it is stripped or rounded out it's over for the hub

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

♣Slew Foot♣ /

1 of 2 options to fix if it is the keyway in the center 1 you get a wad of rolling papers and wrap them around the crank then you take the best Loctite stuff you can find when you put it on make sure it's it's nice and flush and secure on the crank and crank it down as hard as you can make sure that the rolling papers and stuff don't get most out of the sides make sure everything is all tight in there then take a heat gun and heat it it should hold interior heated again with a torch but if it's really bad and that doesn't work for you you can get square keys from the hardware store and cut grooves in both the Hub and the crank that correspond you'll need to take it to a machinist but it would be immediate gratification then trying to hunt down and pay for a part

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Got my graphics back from the sign shop today. While I sort out the clutch problem ( belt pulley hub is not rounded out) I just picked these up, copied from the one original one remaining on the bike . The tank is still a work in progress but is coming along nice.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Still Clutch Problem. See above post picture. When it's all together with new #2, new #3 and new center spring and bolted together there is still nothing depressed with clutch lever adjusted properly. It's like it's all compressed constantly . When you look at Myrons pages about Laura M48 clutch pictures, #4 hub has no attached plate to it, which mine does with a peened over lock ring. Myrons shows a separate Pressure plate where my permanently attached one is. I got that plate from Myrons but don't want to separate my #4 cuz there's no turning back once I do it. Opinions needed. Scroll down to Disc Clutch on this Myrons Linky : http://www.myronsmopeds.com/category/parts/solo-parts/

Here is a set of pictures from an owners guide of a Montgomery Wards open road single speed with a solo engine . Its the same motor as a Solo odyssey. This is the clutch assembly , but i have the entire bike in clear pictures if anybody needs it .

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

^^the open road is variated, different clutch setup.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Josiah Radebaugh /

Ooh, actually this would be nice... Any chance you could scan the page with the clutch assembly? I got this solo awhile back on a bike that was unfortunately pretty wrecked. Anyway the clutch never disengaged and wouldn't variate and for the life of me I couldn't figure out that clutch.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Double Trouble Dan /

They do not show the clutch assembly . Just the case and clutch covers.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Well I got the clutch fixed. The plate on #4 hub in previous picture was held on by a cast retaining ring. I ground that ring off, removed the plate and cleaned out the grooves in the hub. I installed all new parts from Myrons in the clutch hub as per his diagram and it works as it should. This clutch operates OPPOSITE as you think of a car clutch. When you pull the clutch handle ( like stepping on clutch pedal) it ENGAGES the clutch to turn the engine over. When you let go of the handle ( like letting clutch pedal out) it DISENGAGES the clutch allowing it to free-wheel. Crazy but simple Austrian /German tech. I worked for VW for 27 years so I had to TRY reprogramming my brain to think opposite.

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Double Trouble Dan /

Its the same design principle as a Sachs or Batavus . Basically every moped clutch does the same thing with starter clutch shoes.

Think of mopeds as dumb down toys for teens and the manufacturers made them easy to fix with simple tools.

That is why i like them so much .

Still a big kid at heart...

Re: odyssey with an Odyssey

Gas tank done. The black hand - cut vinyl is my idea to cover some remaining pits as I didn't want to skim it with body putty or filler. Hate that stuff. Bike is nearly done but the cold weather here will slow the process down considerably. Tried to bring the whole thing in the house but got the old " what do you think you're doing? " look. Didn't push it.
