Couldn’t help myself

I picked up my second moped in under a month. The Kinetic is fun and all, pushing 30mph now that I’ve been dialing it in, trued the wheels and added air, all stock. But yesterday I talked an 82 year old man out of his ‘02 Targa step-through for $150. Everything appears to be in good shape since everything is smothered in 2 cycle oil from the seat down, front to back. Stinks of bad gas; tank has minimal surface rust, still shiny in most places I can see with visible rainbows from welding. Fuel came out blood red but transparent. Geezer put 28,000+ miles on this thing; came with a meticulously maintained binder full of notes, catalogues, and replacement part receipts.

Anyway, I’m ready for a more advanced project and more speed—after I strip all the shopping carts and bullshit off.

I’m looking at the reedless 70cc Athena 45mm kit in the Puch section at Treats. Thoughts? Any carb suggestions? Mikuni 20mm?

Already has a biturbo pipe.

I guess what I’d like to have to do is buy a new speedometer since this one tops out at 40. Possible?

Geared 26x22 (assuming stock)

Re: Couldn’t help myself

ahhhhh, I wanna say you always wanna keep a trusty runner on hand, with this one tipping 28000 mi it's proven itself. On the other hand its yours, blow it up.

Re: Couldn’t help myself

You talked a geezer out of his pride and joy for cheap. I hope you feel good about yourself. 28k is pretty cool. I would leave all the baskets on. They are very useful.

Re: Couldn’t help myself

Would leave that as is, ride the hell out of it!

Strip it and make a rocket out of it.

Re: Couldn’t help myself

Talked an 82 year old man into taking $150. What was he asking originally, $200 Pat yourself on the back for that one

Re: Couldn’t help myself

That’s the spirit!

^ Never pay more than you have to for anything, always make an offer, unless it is some must have item, dude prob wants to see 83, glad to ditch bike! :)

Re: Couldn’t help myself

Are you sure it's 28,000 and not 2,800.0?

It's pretty rare to see the tomos speedos last past 8k or so.

There is a good list on Myron's mopeds that tells you everything you gotta do for maintenance intervals, I would start there. If it really does have that many miles on it, and hasn't had a full rebuild, it's gonna need it. If it's still running oil injection, ditch that asap since the hoses are probably dry and leaking.

Re: Couldn’t help myself

Maybe you’re right. I get so confused when it comes to numbers and maths; sometimes I wonder if I’m a woman. Then again, I did have to parallel park my RAM 2500 this morning (nailed it) buying a gallon of Zep, so it’s all very confusing and emotional.

Like I said, there is 2-cycle oil everywhere. But worse, I pulled the plug to check for spark and fuel shot across my shop. Pulled the head, the entire case is a gas swimming pool. Explains why Old Man was so flustered trying to prove it would start as fuel poured out the exhaust onto his brick patio.

I’m going to put a kit in it, so I’m ditching the injector and running premix. That is, if I don’t burst into tears trying to convert % or : to oz.

It’s a filthy, stinky, slippery bike. Fluids everywhere. 2-cycle oil even leaked its way into the transmission somehow, maybe from this secondary open reservoir.

Re: Couldn’t help myself

Power wash .

Re: Couldn’t help myself

I will eventually. Going to remove the bulk of the oily dirt with gloves into a shopping bag. Rear fender it’s about 3/4” thick. I don’t want to be accused of an environmental atrocity by my shop neighbors with the Vote Blue No Matter How Demented 2020 bumper sticker. Stupid Karens wear face masks in their own car. Deranged lunatic busybodies.

Re: Couldn’t help myself

Haha, yeah 28k that's wild, usually the speedos break way before that. People around here are pretty progressive when it comes to LGBTQ+ type stuff, we try to make it a safe space, good luck with your journey.

I have no problem with the aggrieved alphabet people. My lesbian porn search history on google proves I’m not homophobic.

for the premix, 1oz oil on 50oz gas, easy math, and any 48mm speedometer will do, try Puch parts to see if you can find anything you like

Re: Couldn’t help myself

Keep the original speedo, you need to roll it to 0 before you hit 83.

Re: Couldn’t help myself

48mm = 60mm, got it.

Math is easy!

sorry remembered the old style speedometer size, this one is indeed 60mm

Re: Couldn’t help myself

Anybody ever dump a gallon of Vaporust in a tank and have this tan precipitate form in the tank?

3CFBEE39-A806-4947-A406-F92171181B81.jpeg

It wound up being about 50% of the tank volume, firm clumps that wouldn’t wash out on their own. Had to dig my finger in there as I washed it out and it crumbled. That’s a sample of what wasn’t washed down the sink.

Etched with HCl, coated with West Systems and 2% white pigment (501) and just a little high density (404) to absorb temperature changes.

I build boat tanks out of West, it’s stable for decades.

Re: Couldn’t help myself

I love West Systems epoxy. I use it for plastic repair, but never tried it on steel or in a tank.

But it sticks forever to any plastic, if flame treated & applied right. HDPE, LDPE, PVC, ABS, UHMW.

Pricey stuff tho.

Re: Couldn’t help myself

That wound up being slightly less than an 8oz cup, about $5; but I see how it can be considered expensive if you don’t have an excuse to purchase even a small can for other uses. And the hardener will turn red/stink like ammonia after a few weeks if it’s opened. Good enough for glass tanks or coating steel, it appears.

ProSet is the good stuff for pulling parts from molds or fixing race boats, unfortunately acquired by West System. Like Master buying the American Lock Co—I can rake a Master Lock open with a screwdriver and a wooden coffee stir. While those brands remain relatively unaltered by their new conglomerate owners, it’s still a damn shame!
