$100 for a moped with a small crack in frame?

Hi everyone, I'm looking to do a moped project and I found a complete Fantic moped rolling chassis for $100.

It does have a 1.5" crack in the frame on the bottom though, and not sure if this is safe or repairable. I was planning on welding a bar for a top tank and wasn't sure if that would stabilize things enough.

Does anyone know if this is repairable or a problem if I just leave it be with an enforcing bar up top? Thanks!

If it's the one in CT, do not buy that.

Cracked due to water freeze expansion. Not worth it.

Why not? If he is a competent welder then go for it. Even if he is not it has a V1 and worth the price for engine and other parts. Dont listen to this moped expert. He is probably just trying to get to it before you. Drive as fast as you can and get it for $100. (edited)

Sorry dirty but dont give bad advice. Keep the moped community honest.

That’s not bad advice. It’s the right advice. If you have to ask if it’s salvageable than you probably don’t have the skill to fix it. No offense Aidan it’s just not worth wielding braces all over the frame to fix the problem. We saw this posting in a group chat a few days ago and it has been compromised by the North East winter. It was left outside and water had expanded in the tube frame and has split it down the center. And who knows if there is any other damage. If Dillon was trying to get that bike this post would not exist.

Adian the price is great for a decent amount of salvageable parts but the frame is toast.

Sorry Pepi, but when water blows out a HREW seam it tends to tweak it pretty bad. The given the general rusty state of the rest of the bike, I would say it's not salvageable.

If you'd have seen photos of the bike, you wouldn't be so gung-ho with the "honest" advice.

And UgP's right, if - for whatever reason - I wanted to grab it, it'd be gone already. But V1 bikes are a plenty, and I've owned two Fantic-built minarellis. Dont like 'em (even when their frames aren't grenades), definitely don't need another.

Re: $100 for a moped with a small crack in frame?

The picture that I saw on the advertisement looks like the crack is about 1.5 inches wide and 5+ inches long.

One of the largest winter freeze splits I have seen and I have worked in bike shops for over 10 years in the Metro Boston area.

Did not see the pics and just seemed like an arrogant post and you just made another. Italian parts and rims are worth the $100 easy. The sprocket on the rim is worth a few bucks to the v1 guy. I owned and torchered a fantic pepi factory rigid and beat the shit out of it on maine pot hole filled roads and never had a problem at 50 plus.

Rims were deep-pitted and roasted.

Sorry for my well-informed, analytical response to another's question.

Re: $100 for a moped with a small crack in frame?

Imagine never having a moped and people telling you this bike is worth more in parts, buying it, and then getting trashed for asking too much for the crusty ass parts posted you posted on B/S. That's how I would see this going down

Re: $100 for a moped with a small crack in frame?

Tweaker trash /

Okay your actually in Massachusetts? I have a moto guzzie no engine,And some ouch frames! Dirt cheap stuff

Pm if interested

Re: $100 for a moped with a small crack in frame?

Why go to CT?

Call Pikes, ask Zack what hes got kickin' around

and post a WTB:BOSTON in Buy/Sell

Somebody has a frame kicking around for cheap. at least then you can see it in person without having to go to fucking connecticut for it

I would stay away from anything with frame damage regardless of how much of a great deal it seems to be.

Re: $100 for a moped with a small crack in frame?

Id attempt to solder it

Ah . I hope so .

I guess I haven't come fully awake yet . ;(

Re: $100 for a moped with a small crack in frame?

I’d rather just get a frame for around the same price except without a crack. Frames are everywhere and a lotta the time under 100$

No use in having to deal with frame repairs if you don’t have to get involved, saves you time, possibly money depending on the deal, and for me it’s worth it enough just to know there isn’t a crackir weak spot in the frame.

Trust me nobody is rushing to steal the fantic frame away from you lolol they’re not the best to begin with.

Re: $100 for a moped with a small crack in frame?

If I wanted a silly project I'd absolutely grab that and make some dumb weird shit, sounds like the frame is wrecked but maybe you could wreck it worse in an amusing way, cut the whole split out and weld in a vintage toaster oven or somethin.

just a thought

but if I wanted a moped and didn't have one, this is a terrible 1st bike. If I had a bunch of mopeds and needed to fix some of them (always) then this also seems like a bad deal when time effort and money are better spent on pretty much anything else. but for a dumb pile of scraps that you don't have to feel attached to cuz it's cheap and you can do something extra funnie with, hard to beat a $100 haul

Re: $100 for a moped with a small crack in frame?

I did end up buying it and I planned on doing that and had already planned on welding a bar for the top for a top tank frame. Also it was not the one from CT.

Given that it's already a brand that seems to have no lineage time time to throw in a CT90 crate motor from eBay and f with it ;) will post when it's done

Fantic has big history.
