variation results in a change in the functional diameter of the variator. Because the belt is a fixed length and the diameter is changing, the distance between the variator and the driven pulley must change to compensate. this is accomplished by the motor swinging back. A spring pushes it back forward when the revs slow down and the variator adjust back to baseline.
