Worst things about a moped?

Terbo Speghetti /

So, I'm trying to convince my "higher-learning" institution to let me do an independent study moped build.

This means access to 5 axis CNC mills and skilled/knowledgable people, but most importantly, it means the government will pay me to build a sick moped.

At this early stage in what will be a long process, I'm trying to refine the idea to present it to the honors committee. The general idea being that I am in an "automated manufacturing" associate's degree program, and I will be designing products to be manufactured that will make things better/easier/faster/safer/more efficient, and so on.

In the interest of that, I'm looking for every complaint you've ever had about a moped, particularly a stock moped.

Could be big things like the pipe burning you all the time, or air pollution.

Could be small things like your hands vibrate too much or you wish there were turn signals or wiring was easier.

Could be dumb things like no heated seat or no video game system.

COMPLAIN AWAY, PEOPLE. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO

Re: Worst things about a moped?

When you love something. It’s unconditional. I see past the faults of mopeds and appreciate all that we share together.

If I was going to build the moped of the future, it would have to be a clean running 4 stroke.

Electric hub motor as a helper for acceleration and re-gen braking. The pedals could be used while riding, not connected to the wheel but to charge the small battery for the hub motor and lights/accessories.

It would be fast, accelerate well, get 250+ mpg, have incredible range.

Annnnnd I wouldn’t buy it cause that ain’t no moped for me.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Terbo Speghetti /

Yeah, if we could refrain from making fantasy wishlists and stick to "i don't like XXXX" style statements about stock mopeds, that would probably make this a lot easier.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

the compromise of take-off vs top speed (now solved pretty universally with variators on scooters) decent acceleration and mid 30's should be always

lack of storage (Super love the storage laden tomos carrier thing, also lots storage underseat etc on scooties)

braking power kinda blows (easily solved w disco)

Not enough major stereos a la bagger Harley style for blasting powerful reggae beats while cruising the streets.

need more legshield/windshields for all weather riding

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Okay. I’m gonna pretend my mopeds are stock and think about it.

The brakes suck

The front shocks suck

I wish it had a battery and charging system to allow normal 12VDC

Single speed sucks.

I feel like when my wife asks me if I still find her attractive or if I’d change anything about her. Of course I don’t mean any of that. Why are you making me do this? I love my simple quirky mopeds for what they are. I don’t want to judge them. I’m triggered.

Going to my safe place I’ll be back later.

You should look into creating a Typeform style questionnaire with questions about what is lacking. Typeform lets you analyze and collate data so you can actually show quantifiable information to the department concerning the needs and wants of vintage riders.

That said:

No mopeds should be one/two speed in the modern era.

Disk brakes isn't a requirement, but large diameter vented drums would be cool.

Basically what WillD said is pretty spot on. The ByeBike pretty much covers most of the reqs for a modern moped in my mind, although storage could be better. In my mind: a Modern Derbi Variant BOX

Nope not if you pick a good brand! Puch mopeds are built high-quality German/Austria standards.

They have timeless styling and still look great after 42 years, strong and very reliable, easy to hop up, mod and rebuild, parts are still available, cateye turn signals only one wire hookup.

Being a trades person Old school is best School, No need to fix what isn't broken is my beliefs.

So like, the single/two speed hate is inspiring. Maybe I'll figure out how to variate a Tomos or something! And yes, good idea with the typeform questionnaire, I'll look into it

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Terbo Speghetti /

And no need to pretend that these are good, people. We don't need to rationalize our love of these bikes.

If they were great, they would still be making them!

And even if you think they're perfect as they sit, I don't care. Go tell someone else about it, that's not gonna get me a MAP grant.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

CDI on everything. More weather-proof, if belt drive enclose it so no slipping in the wet. Shaft drive even better. Stock turn signals. Better brakes. In the end, Electric moped. Oh yeah, stock crash-bars, as you know you will drop it at least once. (edited)

Re: Worst things about a moped?

they dont come with a switch that make them illegally fast. we have a fireworks distributor a mile away, its illegal to use them in ohio, but there they are, parking lot packed full of cars with ohio plates. oh sure they are taking them to a state where they are legal that doesnt sell fireworks. my point being, its only illegal if you use the switch.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Dirty30 Dillon /

Ken Roff coming in clutch with the classic, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Puch motors are great for the 70's, but compare a stock Magnum to a stock 2019 Aerox, and performance and reliability, the scooter wins in every account.

Now take those same chassis' and mod them to the highest extent, and you've got maybe a 12 hp Magnum? Sitting next to a 26+hp Aerox that is literally always on the pipe and pulling power wheelies.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

The previous owners that hack together terrible and unreliable "fixes" that are likely to fail.

Lolol I don't think they teach lobotomies at community college

Re: Worst things about a moped?

m7 screws.

BECAUSE WHY SHOULD WE USE FAR MORE COMMON SCREW SIZES LIKE M6 or M8

M7 doesn’t exist in Germany! I searched for days. Had to order online. 7mm is forbidden diameter.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Dirty30 Dillon /

I love M7.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Terbo Speghetti /

I feel like m7 is a great compromise

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Riding my moped really makes me miss motorcycle brakes

I miss having a <1km stopping distance.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

On a Maxi:

Not being able to tell how much gas is in the tank.

The fine pitch on axle threads.

The 29mm bearing hub in a world without 29mm bearings.

The center stand being connected to the engine so you need to lean, strap, or have someone hold the frame upright when you drop the engine.

No CDI will never last 40 or 50 years because everything electronic grows whiskers or degrades,

Points ignition With no battery and no regulator is a apocalyptic bike because a neutron bomb will not destroy it, basically it’s a steam engine or a carbureted points V8

This is totally irrelevant. Your points need maintenance and cost a lot more to make today than a PCB. Shut up and find a new thread to troll

You are nuts! I put one drop of oil on the felt pad a year

If you call that maintenance well you are silly

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Take off sucks.

Brakes are shit.

Pedal ratio is impractical for actually riding like a bike when it inevitably breaks too far from home.

No fuel gauge.

No quick release wire terminal to make dropping the engine easier.

Kickstands are weak and bendy.

No sick helmet holder to stash my skullcap in so it doesn’t get stolen when I go to the stop n shop for a slurpee.

No good grab rail to assist with moving it outta the way when it’s broken in the garage.

Too vibratey.

Why won’t my carburetor stop leaking?

No invisible mode like wonder woman’s airplane.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Yeah, that's the worst thing..................pedals don't operate to really help the little engine like they could. Puchs and Motobecanes do better than the Morini,Minarelli.

The other thing is the dinky little seats on a lot of mopeds.

Mopeds are great! Stock engine fuel mileage is great! Puts scoots to shame.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Auto mix carbs would be cool, like on the newer Husqvarna chainsaws. Put on a new exhaust or upgrade the cylinder, the carb automatically adjusts itself for you.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Electric start, would be cool. More robust axles and bigger drums. I like the simplicity of drum breaks but moped breaks just plain suck when you make them fast.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Pushrod Fifty /

Fuel injected. Carbon capture for tank gas fumes because it evaporates so fast.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

No visible fuel level.

Horrible for pedalling.

Weak lighting.

Poor drum brakes.
