Re: Worst things about a moped?

50cc's that go 30mph stock, if you're lucky, that get blown away by shitty Chinese scooters.

Step throughs that look like girl's bikes, with no style, no performance, and all look the same.

Top tanks that are just big tanks and a bread loaf seat, with no top bar.

Tiny foot boards that make you look like you're holding in a poop when you use them.

Jumble of wires snaking around the entire bike.

No cool place to put giant license plates.

High rise handlebars.

Shitty plastic throttles, rock hard grips.

Horns that sound like my girlfriend's industrial strength vibrator.

Cotter pins fucking cranks. That shit was out of date before mopeds were invented.

Headlights that don't dim at stoplights.

Center stands that don't continually sag until they won't hold the bike up anymore.

All stock carbs suck.

Wait, why do I like mopeds? Wtf is wrong with me. These things suck.

I wish I could give two women a ride home.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

Don't know how to quote on here but what Chinatown said, a gas gauge for upright tanks! I always think I have enough gas but run out because I can't see inside my tank!

Re: Worst things about a moped?

me and jeremie variated a tomos once, adapted a scooter vario to the crank and the rear driveshaft, kinda like a derbi setup in place of the tomos gearset. it didn't have a clutch to idle though and the trans seal died I think cuz we had to leave all the transmission and drive gears dry

This is rad. I was picturing just machining a new output shaft that would accept a cheap scoot vario and making a subframe for the whole shebang. So like, still two speed but also variated (edited)

Uhhh, lemme get a large order of bluetooth adjusted ignition timing.

they always break

Re: Worst things about a moped?

There's not enough places to store or cook hot pockets on mopeds, too few bikes have bottle rocket holders to shoot safety bottle rockets out of, and if we are really getting into it mopeds need better speedo/tach/ temp dashes

I’ve thought about this problem. The intake ices up. The header side is to... drippy.

But, if you could tack on a heat shield/hot pocket warmer on the fattest part of the pipe chamber, this could work.

Throw a bfast one on there on the way to work.

Using your best Jim Gaffigan to sing “hot pocket” in falsetto under your helmet.

No bueno for Estoril.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

My thoughts exactly. Me and Ray Santos have been trying to find the right victim for this.

There may be one on the next Shanks raffle bike fingers crossed

6v system

Too small for us tall dudes

drum brakes

Non variated.

Fuel tank as structural member on top tanks.

I wish I had got some grant or something to design and build a moped. I got a few ideas.

Id like to see a focus on improving clutches or additions of variatiors. for a modding stand point most moped clutch are too weak and from a stock rider stand point these bikes lack too much crucial low end power.

otherwise I think any improvements making the bike either safer (modern lighting, turn signals, etc) or more reliable. i hate to say this but... i love mopeds but I hardly ever recommend someone to use one for a commuter. there's just too much jank with these bikes which will leave many pushing it home. I like the CDI idea (a mini rotor cdi would make the bkke torquey and reliable). Fuel injection that actually changes your fuel air mixture ratio... could help people avoid seizing when the climate drops over night.

perhaps that's all a wish list but areas I would love to see addressed.

Re: Worst things about a moped?

I have my opinion on the ultimate moped of the future. it would be a tomos line. All original spec's to a T. But made in America with American steel and metal which would rain surpreme better than anything else that can be done to or for mopeds. A tomos factory in America with nothing changing about the moped but reliable strong metals!!!!! Every inch electrical and engineering American!! (edited)

If you weren't changing anything, than all the engineering would be Slovenian... Besides, Tomos is far from the ideal moped: look at the 2018's that were sold. Also, no modern Tomos suffers from poor manufacturing. The frames are fine, the casings and ignitions are made in India an they're fine, and the cylinders are Gilardoni. The ignition issue they suffered from would have been an easy change if Tomos hadn't been replacing weak stators with stators from the same batch.

Also, fuck a 2 speed compared to rear-clutch CVT.

Lol who taught you about metal? Prob the same people that taught you to spell.

Being "american" does not make anything good by default. Including you.

American steel rules because of the plentiful taconite ore in the Iron Range coming across the Great Lakes and the endless Appalachian coal coming down the Allegheny and the Ohio meeting in state-of-the-art foundries that have no competition thanks to strategic bombing... wait, it's not 1955.

What bike can't you find a manual for? I thought projectmopedmanual.info had almost everything

Old steel is one of the things that mopeds get perfectly right. I was joking about the frame I banged straight a while back. New steel (from a similar priced item) wouldn’t have held up to the abuse. The guy I was talking to told me about This . Pretty interesting stuff. I guess pre-war steel gets a premium for sensitive test equipment.
