Drove 3 hrs for my first Batavus, a HS50, yay or ney?

It’s all complete and for $300 I couldn’t believe it was still available on San Diego offer up. It has 11 miles on it. The rear tire is flat, gas tank is super clean, The back story is it was purchased for a high school student to go to school with, he had a minor accident shortly after getting the moped, I guess where he laid it down, no signs of any damage anywhere, so it sat in the people’s garage for years, the person I purchased it from said he was a Gardner for them and the people were clearing out the garage, he helped them out and they just basically gave it to him. Made him an offer he couldn’t refuse he said. It has 11 miles on the odometer and it works! There’s no spark, the magneto looks new, but the set screw for the points looks like a screwdriver has been in it just a bit. Anyone familiar with these?

I'd buy that in a heartbeat, but we don't have many hs50's around here.

Re: Drove 3 hrs for my first Batavus, a HS50, yay or ney?

Always loved the looks of them. Not alot of aftermarket for them but cool bike none the less.

Re: Drove 3 hrs for my first Batavus, a HS50, yay or ney?

I dont believe there are many in So, Cali either. I have not seen any posted that I can remember. The way it sits low to the ground on those 16's, makes it look so sick. i would have no problem collecting cans, walk some dogs,, wash some cars, whatever honest work needed to get done. Eating Top Ramen and sardines for the next week is a small price to pay.

I'm working on fixing that. My kitted bat with an mlm pipe and vm18 hits 50.

Re: Drove 3 hrs for my first Batavus, a HS50, yay or ney?

Nice score! I've got one of those that I just got back on the road a few months ago. They seem small in person but they handle well and don't seem like it when you ride them around. Definitely turns heads.

Looks like you have at least one side cover on the engine which is cool. Those seem to be rare these days.

I'd be interested to know what carb / sprocket / version you have. I think most of the HS50's were 25mph bikes, maybe?

What's wired up on the back? Did it have turn signals or something? I found two extra wires on the back of mine in the fender area as well.

Re: Drove 3 hrs for my first Batavus, a HS50, yay or ney?

they really do look like the top tank was an afterthought.

Yeah that's probably also why they didn't sell well over here. I can only imagine the bullying you'd go through if you rode one of these to school.

Re: Drove 3 hrs for my first Batavus, a HS50, yay or ney?

seats, and tanks on top tanks, should alway marry seamless in a production bike. mobat's are less noticeable. seats are dope! my 2 cents.

Just cleaned the points, added some gas, and pedaled and she is alive after 40 years! She purrs like a kitten. Change out the flat bike tire and we are taking a ride to the beach, yewwww

Awesome bike, congrats!

Re: Drove 3 hrs for my first Batavus, a HS50, yay or ney?

My neighbor has one and I hate him for it (out of jealousy of course) nice find I'd drive pretty far for one of those.

Apologies for suggesting Fred's Guide. After checking your profile I see you've been there done that. Enjoy the new addition to your fleet.

Man, seeing this makes me miss my old HS50. Slow take off, but 33mph all day long.

On the moped there is a small sticker that says this moped is built to 30mph specs, something like that, and i have the 2 wires on the top rear fender to. Does your moped have the toolbox with 2 side reflectors?

Re: Drove 3 hrs for my first Batavus, a HS50, yay or ney?

Never seen the toolkit on these (mine doesn't have that). Do you have a pic? Does it bolt back there under the seat?

Re: Drove 3 hrs for my first Batavus, a HS50, yay or ney?

Yeah, it’s actually broke off from the tab that holds it up, I thInk someone broke it off by putting their hand under it to lift up and move the bike, here’s a couple pics
