Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

On these motors there is no gasket for the case halves. Yamabond is required.

Wait... My goons are legal?!

SWEET!

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Team Gator: Decided to go with an HPI setup. The wiring on this thing was wack. There were connectors spliced in for no reason.

and a janky PW50 stator. The stator screws were stripped out so the impact had to come out.

Removed the oil pump too. I am not convinced that the pump will provide enough oil for a Malossi kit setup.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Ooof - beautiful piston mixed with a little water..

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Must have been liquid cooled.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Cleaned up the motor, added block off plate, working on intake and cylinder next.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

So... for my top end I decided to go a different route a hobbit DR kit. I’ve seen this kit on a QT50 some where on the inter-webs. Since the QT50 and the Sting are very similar in motor parts I figured why not give it a try. I had to drill out the holes for the studs because the sting has closer studs. I also had to space the kit out from the case 3mm for the ports to line up at BDC. I also ported like a derbi Metrakit.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

This means I can run a hobbit pipe now.

I went with a MLM G-104. I can’t wait to hit vtec on my Yamahonda.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Why not the derbi 47mm Airsal kits??

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

That was my plan with my qt50 but piston selection is annoying because 10 pin vs 12 pin.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Man Charlie - not everything needs to get a Derbi Airsal kit! :-)

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Found out last night that Yamaha Stings make chocolate pudding in the rear gearbox! Cleaned that up and regreased it.

Did some horrible case matching, and did a little painting.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Loving this thread so much. Thanks guys!

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Thanks Jay! We are having a good time with it too. Here's what I have been up to. First, added a VM20 MLM intake and cut off the VM mount for a spigot mount. I don't understand why the mating surface is powder coated but whatever.

63337203667__74D0EEE7-D7DE-4A47-8A32-0EB23B29C86B.jpeg

The intake was wobbly, so I decked it and got the powder coat off. It's nice and even / smooth now.

IMG_3208.jpeg

I added a red "race" 21 phbg and a super street head for the Malossi kit. The Malossi kit is known to have clearance issues with the spark plug because of dome-shaped piston.

IMG_3210.jpeg

Going to add an HPI set up soon and other little goodies. :-)

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

If you go with the HPI, I'd recommend adding the weight that you can get for them.

Otherwise I think the mini rotor will be hard on the transmission.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Yeah on that rear end, I was just looking at that on the pdub.. woof that grease! I was thinking about using corn head grease, it turns liquid when it's hot like gear oil then solids up when it's cold like grease. They use it in snowblower gearboxes and farm equipment.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

If you do that - report back. I'd like to hear the results!

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Motor is back on! Mounted the Gianelli Derbi flat reed pipe really easily (without hacking) so Derbi purists can calm down. Needed to cut the case mount down for the stock pipe but not bad! Rear bracket on the Gianelli lines up perfectly. Polished the crap out of it too.

nice. I'm doing this! I may go with another hobbit kit though.

Re: QCB Yamaha Sting Build Off: Gator vs. Potato

Can't decide if I do left or right....
