Fork boots keep grit out of the fork seals on real forks.

Any teeny tiny amount of abrasive material would be like sanding the surface. Forks are supposed to be tight. Removing material will make them loose and wobbly.

Boots are important in environments where dust and grit is blowing around or likely to contaminate the fork seals. On real hydraulic forks.

If you keep them clean, like average clean, I think you’re safe to not worry too much on a moped. Unless you are riding offroad in the desert.
