I had to do some lawnmower repair today. You have to unbolt the jack shaft from the underside of the deck to replace the deck belt. The lift made that easy. I figured i may as well sharpen the blades while i was under the hood too.

The BMW will have to be a winter project. I've got to get ready for winter before it gets here. Still need to close up the walls from where i raised the ceiling and insulate things a litter better in the G.

I've had a request for one of my ZA50 seal tools and i've decided instead of making them from cold rolled tubing, i'd like to cast them out of aluminum using my special toaster oven and finish them on my lathe. But then i remembered... I don't have a lathe.

I think i've got a handle on my lathe dilemma. A cheap drill press on it's side with the table rotated 90 degrees and a cross slide bolted to it. I think it'll work just fine for what i'm doing. I need to fab up a tool post and tail stock. I'm excited.

Lifan? lol! Having a lift would be awesome. How is the BMW? sorry did not see the last few posts, just the mower on the lift. (edited)

As for the BMW i haven't had time to check the bearings in the bottom end yet. I did find a few cheaper online parts houses. I've been going over an STS that is a mess. Can't open the drivers door from the outside, ABS light is on, has a P0420 (cat), 3 dead tpms sensors, no comm with passenger door module and won't open from the outside either, passenger mirror and window do not work also.

Re: Do you even lift bro?

Caddys suck.... I would put my $ into the BMW, at least once right it should be higher quality. Also more saleable. I will stick with my older cars....so much easier to work on. Those valves though....ugh. I gave up on caring about Caddys with the advent of the Northstar engine...total crap. The last decent one was the '96 De'ville with the 5.7, after that crap. Most of those have the hideous vinal tops too....YUK!

Re: Do you even lift bro

Sounds like you have plenty winter projects!

We've had a few cadillacs in the family over the years. I've had good luck with them. My favorite was our white 1991 Sixty Special. It rode like a real Cadillac. Now they all ride like a Mustang GT. Even the DTS rides a bit rough.

Sold the Sixty Special after we bought a 07 CTS a few years ago with 51k on it. It just rolled over 100k and have had zero issues other than the CD player had stopped working, then fixed itself when i replaced the battery a few months ago.

About two weeks after i sold the Sixty Special to a friend, his wife opened the door into the path of a city bus. Such a shame. Destroyed the car. They only made less than 800 of them that year. I picked it up cheap because it needed a water pump at the time. It had over 200k on it when i sold it and it was still running strong.

I got the 2008 STS cheap at auction about two years ago for our daughter and never had time to address some of the nick-knack issues. It has the 4.6 northstar. 320hp/315ftlb. Runs like a rocket. Other than a leaky right valve cover gasket and a fried cat, i can't complain. 126k on it now. I don't really care for the color, but whatever. I just need to get things working and get it sold.

She had been saving her money and just bought herself a 2013 SRX with the direct injection 3.6L. I don't know much about the 3.6 but i guess we'll see how it holds up. It's got 120k on it but is dry as a bone underneath. Picked it up cheap because of the high mileage and the CUE touch screen is dead, but voice command and steering wheel function still works so no biggy, but she ordered a new screen for it anyway. So i'll have fun replacing it. $400 screen coming from china. I hope it lasts longer than the original. They've had issues with them since day one. I guess the sun cooks them.

All cars have issues sooner or later, but i'd take a caddy over any eurotrash car every day of the week.

Re: Do you even lift bro

Sounds like you had good luck, I had a friend with several of them (Northstar) and they all ate headgaskets, were fast as hell when running though. I did not know they still did the 60 special in the '90's....I had a '75...what a barge that was, I just have not cared for them since the advent of the new engines.

Early northstars did have an issue with the head bolt threads pulling out of the block. Most head gasket issues now are result of overheading from neglected coolant leaks elsewhere. I've never been a fan of dexcool myself. Seeping hose connections, crystalized pink shit everywhere. I feel that it attacks alumunum much quicker than other coolants. I'm sure some engineer would argue it, but i just know what i've seen.

Had to look this up for the date. Can’t believe I sat on this piece of shit for 3-1/2 yrs waiting for a motor to blow my way.

Scrap prices are up, so it was time to go. I got $370 for it. I kept the wheels and cats, and the motor is still in the corner of the garage torn apart. Once i unload the cats and wheels i’ll more than tripled my money so it wasn’t a total loss.

Re: Do you even lift bro?

A shame, but just goes to show how over inflated the prices of these high end cars are, and (BMW) especially, how unreliable they can be, it's ALL image, but it can be easy to get sucked into, but you better have the money to pay to play, or lease them! Glad you made a profit.

My passat being the rare trooper at 332,000 miles. But my dumbass recently wanted to spend the $$ on a local VW mechanic and not have to dig into replacing cam chain and tensioner myself on 1.8T engine. Now I’m getting random multiple misfire code on all cyls. Also getting individual misfire codes for each cyl. And worst of all, a code for camshaft position sensor. Brought it in not because of it having an issue, only because of so many miles. Now it idles like garbage and doesn’t wanna hold a steady rpm without misfiring. And of course they’re being lazy about taking care of getting it back in. And if they deny that this has anything to do with their work I will lose my shit. This is why I never typically take my car to a mechanic, it never fucking turns out right for me.🤦🏼‍♂️

Re: Do you even lift bro?

my 01 passat is at 280k right now (almost none of them mine). it drips a little from the valve gasket but i've been putting it off cuz it wont pass emissions. Some startup secondary air intake pump issue with the combi valve keeps the check engine light on and they won't pass it.

I really drive quite little tho, less than 1000 miles on it last year, but that's kinda of a special year. I have more miles on my moped this year than I do on that thing.

Man, that sucks, sure not a Toyota! At that mileage you are better off driving it until it dies, the cost of any work usualy exceedses the value of the vehicle. It's so sad what has become of VW. Air cooled or nothing! Hope you get it sorted out. VW/Audi can overcomplicate a 1 car funeral!

With what you’re describing, it sounds like they put your chain on one tooth off.

Re: Do you even lift bro?

^thats a good point, really would make all those symptoms

Re: Do you even lift bro?

Will, it could just be the vacuum hoses. There are 4 of em and it’s pretty cheap and easy to just replace them before trying to replace the unit itself.
