^ i went through all 251 patents that were issued on Jan 5, 1875 and didn't see it. Wtf?
There's a June 5, 1877 patent that i might browse for tonight. .

It's the lid from a Putnam "Lightning" trademark fruit Jar. https://sha.org/bottle/pdffiles/HenryPutnam.pdf (edited)

This one might be a bit more challenging since it has no markings at all. We dug this up from my daughters back yard.
Made of brass, around 3" long and maybe 5/8" in diameter and was about 4" deep in the dirt. In the picture the pick is pointing to wear marks that are on the underside of both ears.
Her house was built in 1890 and it's a town house, so the yard wouldn't have really been used for dumping.

Did a little more detecting on the back 40 today before the thunderstorm moved in. We found a wheat penny, two lincoln memorial pennies, the other half of the binoculars about ten feet from the other half, a bunch of trash, mainly lawnmowered aluminum cans and pull tabs, but the coolest find was a New York Knife Co pocket knife. According to this auction it dates from 1860's to 1890's.
Unfortunately it is now nothing more than a relic.

My guess is a the core of a stick-type tool, like a broom or mop. A wooden shaft could slip into the cylinder, and the "ears" prevent rotation; wear might be from te back-and-forth drag of wires/other material that fastened to the lower half at that point. Just an idea...

Yeah the Amsterdam subway excavations were pretty cool, at work we have the book with tens of thousands of their finds and the escalator in one of their new stations also has a big display cabinet.
Their way of documenting everything, even things from the last 100 years is really inspiring.
Today was a pretty slow day, but i did find this 50's pocketknife.
