Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

The Benelli is pretty sweet for a sport bike looking mini and I think just as much horsepower as the 150cc 4valve Spade. $2499 msrp and there's a used one near me for a great price. The over the top anime-esque sport look just doesn't do it for me but it is a great bike on paper anyway.

In Georgia we don’t have those breakdowns anymore, it’s either a “moped” or a motorcycle. If I felt extra stupid my dumb little XL70 could go on the highway.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

In that case I would still pocket the extra cash and rode the Spade. The your vlogger I mentioned went +1 on the front sprocket and consistently cruises over 70. That's fast enough for anything under an exit or two on the interstate here. Plus I think the Vanvan looks odd.

That’s what I like about it. It looks like the motorcycle a 12 year old would draw, lol.

^so goofy it's awesome, kind of like that Yamaha 200 fat tire thing...

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

tw200/ van van same idea

i had a TW, bought it almost by accident, it was sitting behind this radiator shop and the dude took it as payment, i gave him 300 bucks, only reason i bought it was because it was pink and purple and i thought that was awesome

turned out to be a great bike, super friendly, easy to ride, you can put anyone who has never ridden a motorcycle on that thing and they can ride it instantly.

beauty is in the eye of the beerholder or whatever, but don't knock em till you try them they are great bikes and have an almost fanatical cult like following.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

I had a tw200 also, it was cool and tractored over everything. Had a DR200 at the same time. TW definitely had more power, or at least it felt that way - takeoff and top speed. but it was significantly less manageable offroad and it didn't have a title so I ditched it and kept the DR. turned out to be a massive mistake, but the TW was cool

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

I went and put a deposit on a Spade today. It's a 2019 and will have to be brought from the Carolinas but will take about a week. I'm not going to pick it up until my tax return comes through. While I was at the Kawasaki dealer that also sells Kymco I did get a chance to sit on a Z125 and I was quite unimpressed by the bike. It was a bit cramped, the seat slopes forward hard, and the bars seem lower than the seat (they are very close). The riding position felt like I was falling forward over the front end and the seat forced me up onto the tank. I also couldn't see the front wheel past the body work. The controls looked a bit odd and overall kind of cheap. It really made me feel better about deciding on the Spade, which even with a lower seat height felt like a much longer and more spacious bike with a far more natural riding position. The controls look more like a "normal" layout and had the same or better quality than the Kawi.

I had never considered the Z125 but now I am sure that was a good idea.

The 2019 Spade had the price bumped to $3,199 for some reason even though it's virtually unchanged from 18' but I'm going to work on the price if I can. All totalled I'll be paying (if I pay sticker) $3742 with tax and tag but no setup or delivery fee.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

^ Congrats! A lot of money, but you should be able to enjoy that machine a good long time. Kymco is an excellent make, at least the scooters I have ridden were.... very impressive quality. Post pics when you get it!

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

Oh I surely will. The two year warranty and a dealer about 15 min away give me a good sense of security. The payments will only be 100-120 a month and I would likely pay it off sooner. For something that is worry free and turnkey (that fits through the front door of the house) I would gladly pay. I was really interested in the new Monkey but when I really sat and thought about it I felt I would be having to justify the purchase to people far too often and I might end up remorseful, and it is far more expensive than this even.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

This will be FAR more useful than the Monkey. Excited to hear your experiences with it. Again congrats! Happy for ya!

That was how I felt about the husky vitpilen. shwartz probably better. still interesting bike tho.

spade is pretty cool. I'm not spending 3x as much as my car to get any more small motos tho, yikes. but as far as that genre goes or new bikes in general that's pretty rad. I do consider those new cubs sometimes but it'll never happen

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

Geeze that thing looks like you will always feel as if you are riding bitch on a pillion... 3" or one hard bump from death.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

eh yeah having all your weight on your shoulders is my biggest 'fist shaking get off my lawn kids' old man gripe about all those nakeds. The FZ07 is probably the best. I love love love the 690 duke but it really beats your shoulders up on any kind of bump. I mean, its good since without your weight forward that thing is wheelie time, but for daily riding i'd rather ride a small enduro any day.

I just thought of this thread, Kymco dealer by me is advertising a '17 K-pipe for 999 on CL right now- brand f'n new.

that, to me, is crazy... how can that be so cheap? if i had a lil extra cash kicking around i'd go buy the thing just knowing i could always sell it for as much or more used come summer.

it would be fun to have a nice, new, stable plat form for the chassis (not some jankass 50 year old s-90) so you can fuck with engine funtimes and not have to worry about overrunning your brakes.

i feel like i'd love to do a z- motor project at some point, and the k-pipe would be the best chassis to have a rude z-clone strapped to, but the niche this thing would fall into, i already have like 6 bikes that do everything this would do better- lighter, faster, more fun to ride, more smokey, cooler and more vintage.... just cant justify having it in the stable.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

there's the black version too - "svartpilen" that's got taller bars and more offroad style. definitely would be my preferred.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

Alright that got me tingling. But that's not a mini at all, right?

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

They're not huge bikes but they definitely aren't minis. I sat on all the models at an expo and the Svartpilen with its taller bars is way more comfortable. I could see it being a super practical in town bike that you could still take on weekend trips or a quick jaunt down the highway. Not enough wind protection to want to go to long on the highway though.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

i'm always impressed by how well KTM/Kiska manage to handle the ergos on bikes that look uncomfortable as fuck

but

seriously

there is no way you would want to do 3+ hours on that thing, especially with someone on the back.

that 790 adventure looks pretty rad... but now we are ot on the OT on the O.T.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

Don't worry, they wouldn't be on the back for very long.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

Yeah any big bike I get, especially if it costs grown up money, my wife is gonna have a say in passenger comfort.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

I just got my girlfriend to take the CWP course yesterday, one baby step at a time. Riding on two wheels is way in the distance. Bright side is my toys get to be single occupancy.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

yea my friend got the vit when he cashed in some bitcoin, it's super fun. I didn't know anything about it and after a quick ride was pretty surprised it was only a 400. revs high for a thumper. but he lives like 30 miles outta town and we've yet to get him to ride it that far. got other bikes that are better highway rides, but I wannim to butthead around Cleveland with us some night on that thing

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

44hp would hide that small displacement really well.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

Went to progressive show Saturday. Was really really unimpressed by the new monkey, very much love the new cub but it looks super awkwardly doofy from the front or back. you never see those angles in the promo photos. the front fork spread looks very awkwardly wide and the rear fender is so much wider than the rear wheel it's obnoxious. and then the wheels I think are 16's and it shows. just that slightly larger wheel would fill it out MUCH nicer.

As for the monkey, it's equivalent to the grom, except looks like an almost afterthought, hastily pasted together vintage looking parts on a grom. The grom looks so much more complete and intentional, and starting costs a whole $800 less! that's a 25% price drop for better parts and looks, if you can dig the future/naked concept vibe. kinda no brainer. it wholly whoops the Kawasaki too. if I was getting into that market I might go with the lifan for carby simplicity and low price and morbid curiousity, but the groms probably the best bet, especially considering resell - even several year old models still fetch over 3/4 of new which is pretty crazy.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

A quick search on Craigslist does show that there are several examples of people asking for damn near list, especially for the three "fully stunted" mini monstrosities on there in my area. Makes me chuckle a bit and keep on moving.

Re: Battle of the Mini's! grom, zx125, benelli 135, lifan 150...

Looks like the spade is on hold for me. Even with a large amount down I couldn't get the financing because with average credit you can't get "toys" and they check you for the full amount of the bike not matter what. I may look into a personal loan but maybe it's not time. I could save and buy the bike outright but I would be ignoring more responsible purchases. Time will tell but I still badly want one.
