That trick actually works. Done it many times, especially on large lug nuts. A well worn, loose fitting 1.5” truck lug socket works way better than a tight new one. The next size up socket often works well. Also, run the gun forward first a hair, then backwards. Just my professional experience from a time long ago. I hate changing truck tires.
