is the entire scooter community full of idiots?

I just joined a face book group called new england scooters and mopeds.... well it was all scooters with not a single moped related post to be found.

I get that moped people are a bit different and weird... I can deal with that. These guys however just all seemed like fucking assholes.

Scooter riders generally dislike mopeds and moped riders generally dislike scooters. I happen to enjoy riding both, so I get along with everyone.

There but for fortune go you or I

If your taint landed on a scooter first, you might be over there thinking moped people were weird.

Re: is the entire scooter community full of idiots?

Everybody is someone else's weirdo, just a fact of life.

Well like I said I can deal with weird.

These guys weren't weird.... just assholes. They were just posting videos of doing moronic shit on scooters, doing illegal and dangerous crap on highways, no helmets, etc...

Mopeds were designed to do 30. Most people on here are illegal

I like all motorized vehicles. Don’t give a shit, they can all be cool if you fuck with em enough. But people definitely go overboard on either side of the invisible fence.

Scooter people don’t like moped people because they call their scooters mopeds and moped people get mad.

Those are mostly trashy pot metal scooters anyways. Real scooters come from italy and are premium products ;)

That group has been super beneficial to me in the past. But yes, there are a lot of idiots that ride “mopeds” (scooter)

I’ve found classic 2 stroke moped people to be gruff at first but really helpful and knowledgeable a lotta the time. Something to do with the upkeep of these bikes make people who really ride them passionate about them.

Re: is the entire scooter community full of idiots?

Dan’s on to a basic difference there. What sets us apart is likely due to the fact that rarely do people get into this by buying a working moped.

We have to restore them first and then mod them. Different culture and personality for sure.

Like the difference between old hot rod guys and ricer tuners.

But everyone is welcome to do as they wish. If I’m not down with someone else’s style, I just abstain from their company.

Your first issue was participating in Facebook.

Second, Dan's right. Groups like that draw from all walks and most people buying a scooter are not doing it for the vintage aesthetic or for the opportunity to rebuild a motor.

Here in NYC, as soon as my garage gate opens and I roll the bikes out I get people asking if I work on/sell scooters. The other day someone walking buy asked how much I sell them (mopeds) for, and I replied "between $1200-1400, depending on the bike and what work goes into it."

His response: "Yeah, well for that kind of money I'd rather just get something with a real motor."

Me: "These all have motors..."

Him: "Oh, I thought you pedalled them to charge the battery."

Me: (speechless)

This is the type of person who will by the Qigong Speedway R50 SuperSport Ruckazoid off of CL and be asking in two weeks why he has no compression after "derestricting" it and swallowing a valve.

But seriously, get off Facebook groups for Mopeds. While MA isn't area- or make/model- specific, at least all the posts and info is searchable and databased, and you will get actual good, if critical, answers.

Yeah im quickly realizing that.... I found another group that was more moped specific where a guy replaced his headlight with a mini flood light..... "This is the brightest upgrade you can get".... yep and you're blinding the shit out of other drivers and guaranteed to attract attention from a cop doing that but you do you buddy.

I really do hate the internet sometimes.

Scooter club members in RVA ride both vintage and modern scooters. They perform most maintenance procedures on their scoots and a good number of folks have no problem tearing into their vintage and modern scooters. They are also very receptive to including moped folks in their rides and rallies. You cant judge all scooter folks by off putting interactions on a FB group. You need to get out into the real world and meet these folks. (edited)

Re: is the entire scooter community full of idiots?

I definitely started on a scooter. it was very different and I mostly rode alone and worked on it NONE. but this is like a new scooter, I expect that's mostly what you're running into.

then theres the vintage scooter folks, which wind up crossing over with the new ones with vespa clubs and whatever. we went to the atl group rallies, there were totally fun lovin goobers but the ratio was lower, more older folks, staying in hotels individual rooms and showing up to well scheduled events and riding in neat lines. it's not the carefree and formless chaos that a moped rally is.

we def tried to incorporate some of the more organized events structure from the scooter rallies and it doesn't work. if you've got a scheduled slow race at 4pm, a scooter rally's got its squad lining up at 3:50, vs a moped rally where nobody's even at the place til theyredone eating at like 8 or 9 and then maybe the next day someone mentions "oh yeah we were supposed to do XYZ". That or it's an impromptu thing that's organized with some determined yelling at everyone, and maybe 1/10 people participate in and everyone else forgets
