If you were a goofy kid growing up in the 70s and 80s theres a good chance this place spawned countless dreams of the human race making alien contact.
At the time it was futuristic and high-tech, a modern wonder in the search for E.T., tucked deep in a dense forest in Puerto Rico.
Here's to the Arecibo for what it achieved, what it inspired, and may we never stop seeking contact.

Damn, that's sad to see it gone. I was lucky enough to visit it when I was a little kid, it was awesome. So much bigger than pictures can convey.
I think it also turned out you could do it much more easily and efficiently with a widely distributed array of smaller dishes and coupling the info.
