Wasn't the thud the F-104? The Phantom was an amazing aircraft, back in the day the Duluth National guard was the last outfit that flew the Phantom, we could go hang out by the field and watch them take off and land during training flights, to watch them test the afterburners at night was unreal, so much raw power, shook the ground.

Along Lake Superior in Duluth was the only time I heard the sound barrier being broken, fuckin awesome.
