Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Frederick vdL /

I have these so called hybrid variomatic transmissions for sale.

These fit any Vespa/Piaggio (Ciao / Si / Bravo / Boxer etc.)

The way these have been produced is by press fitting two shafts together (hence the word hybrid):

- The primary shaft that was used is the stock pulley-transmission shaft.

- The variomatic scooter shaft that was used is for Peugeot/Piaggio scooters/mopeds.

Both the Piaggio/Vespa shaft as well as the scooter (Peugeot) shaft are NEW parts. No used parts were used for this transmission.

The casing/transmission hub has been professionally bead blasted and rebuilt with new bearings and seals all around. Sold and shipped without oil (due to possible leakage).

The advantages of these variomatic transmissions is that the clutches that can be mounted on them are stronger and are tunable (more aftermarket parts available, i.e. clutch segments, springs, clutch bells etc). This allows you to reach higher top speeds and allows for a better (and smoother) power transmission to the rear wheel.

These transmission ratios are stock 1:7

1:10.5 or higher ratios are available on demand only.

$200 shipped for the transmission, excludes the clutch (international insured and signed for shipping). (edited)

Not per se. Kickstart works too ;).

Also, I have a modified Peugeot clutch bell that has a pin and spring going through the bell all the way into the clutch. The pin has to be pressed down, and once the compression engages the bike can be push-started. As soon as the bike starts, the pin shoots back.

This is still a prototype version. It will work on all stock/normal bikes, but I am running it on my Simonini and Sprocatti bikes, hence why I want to see whether or not it survives the compression produced by the engines I am running prior to selling these to the public :).

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Have these been installed on anything yet?

To me, the pulleys look massive, like you would have to flatten out your frame completely for them to not rub.

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Holy shit... how did I not see these? so broke, yet so cool.

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

^yeah I wish I had more monies to afford one right now!

The shaft has been pressed in such a way that the pulleys cannot rub into/against the subframe. There is more than enough distance between the rear disc and the subframe (even a strengthened/thicker aftermarket subframe).

They pulleys are bigger, meaning your belt can "dig deeper" into them. You will increase your top speed a lot and as these are scooter clutches, which are more advanced than stock Vespa clutches, you will have a better variation and acceleration.

Speeds of 100+km/h (63mph) have been reached with these small 12" wheels, that's about 72mph for a Ciao, Bravo or a Si (with bigger wheels) - this was a stock clutch and spring on a 1:10.5 ratio gearing. This gearing is even lower, meaning even more top speed!

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

These are game changers. I just bought one. Guys, this is gonna be insane. I probably won't get it on a bike until sometime in January which will be prime riding time here in michigan...but as long as it's dry I'll give it a test drive in comparison with my stock clutch. thanks again fred!!

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Any more avaiable? Pm me if so fred.

1:6.73 ratio SOLD.

I still have 1:7.5 ratios and one (very special) 1:8.44 ratios.

PM me with special requests.

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Gosh I want...

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Ok, This sounds amazing. I keep blowing my clutches out on my grande. I'm assuming from the thread that this will be a direct bolt onto the grande rear hub? How much for the entire setup including the rear clutch/pulleys and clutch bell?

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Frederick vdL /

This is indeed a plug & play replacement setup. Take out your old hub/transmission and put this one in.

1:7.5 set SOLD!

I believe that was the last 1:7.5 set I had - will double check!

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Looks like the vespa Brad's will be KILLING it this year. =)

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Are you doing this for hobbits next?

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

I've been planning one of these. The shaft fits perfect in the single speed trans. Curious how the 1:7 will work out

Not really planning to. But if you tell me what you'd need, I can look into it. Everything is possible.

Other ratios will be available soon - not yet finished making those.

1:7 will give you a nice top speed :)

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Moen z ill bring it out to the pdx..

Re: Hybrid Variomatic Transmissions & Shafts for Piaggio/Vespa

Nice Brah'd. I have all the stuff to make one. Did you get the 1:7?
