Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

I have been taking the engine apart and have been looking in the manual and it said I need to take off the circlip which is on the clutch and I don’t know how to take it off

It takes a special kind of pliers, called circlip pliers or snap ring pliers.

Oh okay

Oh yeah, you'll probably need some tools to take a motor apart

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

Are there any other kind of tools I will need to take the rest of the motor apart?

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

You may need a clutch puller. I'm not sure though. Some do some don't. I don't know if there's any special tools you need for Garelli. Hopefully someone who is more familiar will speak up if there is. Circlip pliers are a must have tool tho. I have several pair.

You will need a clutch puller.

If you can't Google "how to remove a circlip" then you're in the deep end already

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

Will this work?

No, you need one for Garelli.

www.doscycles.com or www.treatland.tv please.

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

Owen, you need to make a friend of someone (mow their lawn, walk their dog, wash their car or just pay them) with mechanical knowledge and a complete tool shed. They will have pullers, snap ring and every other sort of pliers, brass hammers, rubber hammers, a torch, gasket knowledge(thick or thin matters on a moped case), allen wrenches, screwdrivers,etc.,etc.,

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

I want to learn how to do this and want to have the tools

So print out the manual and read it.

They list the tools required.

Admirable. Keep at it, & be patient. Other than the basics, build your tool arsenal as you need things. Don't waste money on specialty tools that you might need someday. A lot of your learning will be by trial and error. Try to make your errors minor! But sometimes you just gotta dive in, and take it apart. Always lay your parts out in order, so you can put it back together easily. Pay special attention to washers and shim locations. Remember, if you screw up and break something, it's just mopeds.

Post a pic of the clutch so we can see what kind of clutch puller you need.

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

The search function on this site will tell you a LOT,Owen. And yes, like stated earlier, print out the shop manual.

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

There’s the clutch

Yes, that's the clutch. What's your question or point?

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

Seth B told me to post a picture of it

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

Is this real?

The whole rebuild procedure is in the Clymer manual for Garelli mopeds.(edited)

On my piston the rings are loose, are they supposed to be like that?

Lol yes

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

We all gotta start somewhere, guys. I commend the kid for trying, and asking questions, as elementary as they seem. Yeah, he could certainly benefit from searching and reading more, but at least he's diving in, one toe at a time.

I asked for a picture of the clutch, because he wanted to know what clutch puller he needs. I wanted to see it.

You aren't going to find the factory tools.

Get yourself an electric impact wrench to get the clutch and main gear nuts off. It's a great tool and you will find uses for it forever. Or you can put the cylinder back on and use a piston stop, but there is mild risk of damage.

Get a small 2/3 jaw puller to pull the main gear off.

Look on treatland for the garelli flywheel puller. Iirc, it's 19mmx1mm

I think that's all the special tools you'll need

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

I already have a electric impact wrench and I do use it for everything.

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

Will this work for the jaw puller?

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

And I already have a flywheel puller

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

DrGeorgeTompson (Alan) /

It should work, yes. I personally think that's kinda expensive but whatever. I put mine in the holes on the main gear. You might need some heat. They are on tight and tend to pop off pretty violently.

I also suppose you may not need to remove the flywheel if you are just splitting the case to examine the chain.

The case gasket should be .5mm thick. You can run it without a gasket and use some kind of sealant instead, but the crankshaft and other shit can bind so I don't recommend it.

Re: Just bought and the pedal start won’t work

Dirty30 Dillon /

Absolutely need to pull the flywheel to split the cases.

That three jaw might work for pulling the main gear, if that is what you're after.
