garelli SS no spark

Ken Koehler /

I would appreciate any suggestions on troubleshooting my no spark problem.

Moped was just taken out of storage (2 yrs). Cleaned carb, added fresh oil/gas mix, new spark plug. when kicked to start--no spark.

Only thing that I can remember before storing was that it would run just fine until I came to a stop. Then, most times but no all, it would not hold the low idle. It would shut off. To prevent this shut off, I would keep alittle pressure on the throttle.

(rear tail light bulbs are good)

Please help! Thanks!

Have you checked/cleaned the points?

Re: garelli SS no spark

swiched to "on" flip it back n forth a few times

Re: garelli SS no spark

First thought is points. Def clean em well. If it sparks now but weakly, clean em better. If still nothing my next would be Disconnect the kill wire so the power is straight from the engine to the coil and check, that omits any switch issues. Then start tracing back from boot to wire to coil to stator checking for power but I think it's just gonna be points

First, Thanks for the replies/suggestions. Still no spark.

I have cleaned the points using "Fred's Guide" instructions. After cleaning, I checked the gap. It seems to be smaller that the recommended .015. Is that part of the problem?

Question for willd. I have not done your suggested step 2. What/where is the "kill wire"?

FYI to all responders. Using the resources found on https://www.motorcycle-manual.com/garelli/

I have identified the problem area to be with the Run/Off switch. Will check for proper grounding tomorrow...

Re: garelli SS no spark

Ken; I looked at the resource you mentioned, and it looks great. I wonder if you (or others) know of a similar electrical troubleshooting guide for a Vespa Bravo. Thanks.

sorry. I do not but based on my experience, just keep searching, sometimes rearranging your search words. Its is probably "out there" somewhere.

Good luck.
