How to get my QT50 running great

I’ve got it clean and running. New oils and gas. Will run well on choke, but wants to die when choke put to run. I’m thinking it needs a good carb cleaning and maybe a fuel filter just because. Thoughts?

Thorough carb cleaning and an inline filter.

Hardly worth cleaning and playing with the carb unless you have a burning desire to keep it all Yamaha factory issue.

I got a clone carb, fuel line and filter from Treats, an oil pump block off from Fast from the Past, and a single carb cable that deletes the splitter and cabling to the oil pump from Parts for Scooters. Move the stock 70 jet from the factory carb to the clone, move the needle clip to the next position up from the middle, and move the factory carb top to the clone with the new cable. The 70 seems fine to me: the QT was pretty fat from the factory. You may want to try a 72.5.

Mix 32:1 premix, ( I like Mystik Sea and Snow, 3.49 a quart at Menards) and go ride.

Sure, lots of good 2T oils out there, this is just what I run, have for a long time, and have zero complaints or issues.

Fuel line and filter. Line and filter

Mystik oil. Sea and Snow

He should get it running good in stock configuration before he creates more problems with any changes .

You have a point, but he did ask how to get it running GREAT, not how do I get it running. In stock configuration, the QT never ran GREAT. It was too fat from the factory to keep the piston cool, the injection system only gave you enough oil to keep it alive for a while, and it would eventually begin leaking down and fill the crankcase with the whole contents of the oil tank.

Sure he can clean, and poke and prod. But the recipe I gave gets it running very well. GREAT if you will.

Ha . You also have a good point .

Still , starting from a stock situation at least provides a good base .

And , great has many levels of definition . ;)
