Problem with TrailTech temperature gauge

Has anyone had this problems with their TrailTech temperature gauge?

I have gone through about 10 TrailTech temperature gauges. This model: https://www.treatland.tv/trail-tech-TEMPerature-V2-featuring-FRONT-mount-p/trail-tech-tach-dash-732-et3.htm

Luckily, TrailTech offers a warranty and has been replacing the gauges but I would like a temperature gauge on my moped and they stop working after as soon as one ride with a new gauge.

TrailTech is saying the reason the gauges are not working is because something is triggering the electrical noise switch on the gauge. It was recommended that I moved the gauge, so I moved it from the handlebars to by the carb and it is doing the same stuff. The gauge will start cycling the time, maximum temperature, and current temperature and then stops recording the current temperature. After a while, the gauge goes blank.

I’ve had them cycle through once in a while but it never lasts more than a minute or so.

Sounds like it could be rf coming off the points...you could try sheilding the thermocouple wire by wrapping the length of it with a few turns of very thin gauge wire and grounding that to the frame...no electrical connection to the gauge. Farraday cage

I have the same type of gauge on my other moped and have never had a problem.

Aaron - you might be right about the points. I have move the gauges around and it gets worse when closer to the points. Is there a way to measure the electrical noise? I am willing to try the faraday cage if I can get another gauge.

Yes, but you would need access to a lab spectrum analyser...no need though..if you really want to hear the interference got to a second hand store and grab an am radio...I'd bet with it next to the points you won't find a station, just static that might modulate with rpm...

Excess rf is usually due to an A wide points gap....when Marconi invented radio transmission it had no antenna! The transmitter was a modulated high voltage spark gap! Guess what ur points are doing :) a new condenser might help as well.

Adjust ur points, should only need a screwdriver and something the correct size to shove in between whilst tightening...the gap should be listed here somwheres..but I just use cardboard from a case of beer, never had a problem...

I was thinking of shielding the gauge in the headlight enclosure and making a farraday cage.

I checked the point gap with a feeler gauge. It is 0.4 mm.

Could be a problem with your coil too.. normally your bike shouldn't make this much interference...best to find the problem....wish I could point you in the right direction

The new trail techs don’t like some of the ignitions set ups like the puch cdi adventure pack 2.0 . Also they don’t like some spark plug wires like https://www.treatland.tv/ATOMIC-ignition-wire-p/atomic-wire-red-cloth-short.htm

I’m think it’s electrical noise interference.

You should maybe try the gauge without hooking up the backlight wiring - just use the spark plug connector, it maybe overvoltage to the gauge causing it. I'm running after market LED headlight/taillight and before I added dc-dc controller - I blew both headlight and a tail light bulb.

The old silver ones never acted up!

The new black ones need to be as far away from the plug wire as possible for they have a tachometer circuit and clock circuit in them So they can use one gauge for a few things,

Yeah many things got ruined by redesign, and that is one of them

I have the same problem on my Tomos A3 but not on my puch E50. Could type of spark plug boot have anything to do with it?

Okay folks. What is happening is the spark plug wire is back feeding juice into the wire. The controller can't handle the electricity and is physically jumping the button causing the jumping issue.

I work for TrailTech and have talked extensively with the engineer who designed this thing. We are experimenting some some clip on Ferrite things that go on the wire. They drop shipped me a giant bag of them. If you have a TTO that is doing this, please send me a message and I will mail you one.

You clip it onto the cable and it is supposed to absorb the rogue noise. I have passed this thread on to them, but this thing was designed a decade ago, not much hope of a retooling at this point even though it is a 30 second fix in the circuit layout.

Yep! Plug with resistor ... as simple as that. Swapped my b7hs with a bR7hs and problem solved.

My new black trail tech on my stock bravo with stock ignition is now seemingly permanently on a clock mode. Is there a way to reset this thing?? I have two more boxed and waiting to do this I suspect. Is this a return item at this point ???

I went a year with no issues! The only thing I changed was I put on a shielded spark plug wire. I’m gonna try a resisted plug and a new coil. I think my temperature gauge is out of warranty, I hope they’ll send me a new one.
