Sears Free Spirit 78 tank question?

ellis richman /

Greetings all! I'm driving to pick up my 78 Free Spirit from Ebay :o) - If the tank has some rust in it, a Puch repair tech said, Don't buy it. If it has rust, is there a treatment most often recommended? Also, does anyone have a Owners Manual PDF they'd share with me please?

ALSO I'm "Jonesing" for the plastic gas-tank black side-panels w circles, and happy to pay for them if anyone would help please! All the best and thank you, Ellis in Rehoboth

ps - This is my first moped, I'm SOO excited, wanted this model for a long time, and the price was reasonable. Anyone see any problems with asking the tech to "de-regulate" the engine so it goes a little faster?

Re: Sears Free Spirit 78 tank question?

Rusty tank is no big deal, it is easy to clean out on those detachable tanks. There’s a lot of info and different techniques for cleaning rusty tanks that you can find here.

Re: Sears Free Spirit 78 tank question?

So here’s the deal. Avoid EBay, you’ll pay waaaaay too much. I’m scared to ask how much you paid for that bike, but what’s done is done. You should have done research before you bought it, but here we are, so let’s make the best of it. There is lots of info on this site about de-rusting a tank, and getting it running. Spend a day or two searching and reading all over this site, especially the wiki tab. You’ll find everything you need to know if you look for it. Read Fred’s guide.

Second, don’t pay a “tech” to deregulate as you say. Don’t hire a mechanic as they likely know nothing about these little bikes and will probably screw it up worse for you. Learn to fix it yourself, there’s no other good option, period. Everything you need to know about de-restricting your moped is on this site. All you can imagine about modifying and making it faster is on this site, if you poke around a bit.

Third, those plastic pieces you speak of did not come on your model. They only came on the Deluxe (silver colored) version, not on the standard (red), or the hard tail version (blue). They will fit on yours, but they are impossible to find, so bag that idea.

All that said, nice bike. In my opinion, the Free Spirit is about the best step thru moped you can own. I have two of em. Reliable, strong, and cheap & easy to work on. Nice bike; enjoy. And have fun reading and learning.

Gracious THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

$375 seemed reasonable, it's warranted to be in good riding condition. Did some research, maybe paid a little too much, but it's an hour drive from where I live, and no shipping. Again THANK YOU!!

Re: Sears Free Spirit 78 tank question?

You did okay. That’s about average price. I was afraid you might have paid over a grand, as I often see them advertised for. Enjoy guilt free!

Re: Sears Free Spirit 78 tank question?

BTW, I’ve used vinegar to de-rust tanks many times, but I now use EvapoRust exclusively. But read up on it, and make your best judgement call on your method.

Hi, I'd LOVE to learn to do everything myself, but engines etc are not my forte. I'm sorry, but I don't even know what the best gasoline is to use, or oil, or how to mix it :(

But I'm willing to learn! I'm very handy, if I have a video tutorial I could probably hack my way thru just about anything :o)

Re: Sears Free Spirit 78 tank question?

I'm just saying, the E50 engine is literally the simplest thing since bologna sandwiches. There are tons of tutorials in the wiki. There are also utoob videos. If you have any ability to work with your hands and follow directions, you can do it. Start very simple first, and get it running well stock first. Follow Fred's Guide. It's easy. It will save you so much headache if you learn to do it yourself. Unless you can find a shop specializing in vintage mopeds. But just learn it. It's simple.

Got it. I'll review the literature. If it's over my head, I have a technician at a motorcycle shop named Steffan that's a moped specialist. But you're right! I'd like to learn it myself. All the best, Ellis

Thank you all for this information it is SO helpful!!!

I read Fred's guide, that's excellent. Also, I found a 110 page Free Spirit repair manual on Ebay (printable CD) and THAT's going to be really helpful, the schematic diagrams and instructions may give me the confidence I need to take this on myself. I'm off to go pick up my first bike now, and I'm as giddy as a little kid getting his first bicycle. This is a GREAT group of kindred souls, I'm very thankful for all your help.
