Electrical Nightmare

Drake Abrahamsson /

My lights aren’t working but my bike runs. I’ve been able to identify a “trail tech dial-a-brightness AC voltage regulator”. I don’t have brake lights or a horn- just the tail lights and headlight. I can’t find a wiring diagram for my setup. The owner said it was a 12V system and the regulator also points me in that direction. don’t have much electrical experience at all so the diagram may be under my nose but I just can’t tell really what I’m looking at. I’ve attached some horrible horrible pictures of how the wire terminal looked before I took it all apart, but I can’t even guarantee that it worked before that because the moped wasn’t running and there was no taillight whatsoever. I spent a lot of time and used a bunch of other pictures I took to put it back together so I’m positive I put it back together how I got it. There are a lot of connections into the terminal that aren’t connected to anything on the other side. I bought a new taillight and replaced the 6V bulbs that came with it with 12V ones. The headlight is a 12V H3 halogen 55W bulb. The wires are nearly all awful so I wouldn’t be opposed to rewiring the whole system. Any guidance/resource provision would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just realized somebody made a thread titled the same thing 2 days ago haha woops, but this is a different issue so please help still lol

Re: Electrical Nightmare

Whenever you're dealing with a somebody else's past wiring experiments, you basically have to start at step 1 and go over every component in the electrical system to see what exactly you're dealing with. My guess is P.O. swapped in a 12v lighting coil for the headlight and the rest of the system is still 6v, but you'll have to test to find out.

We're going over wiring at our free Moped Workshop LA class in Boyle Heights this Sunday the 25th. I know it's not exactly close to you but if you can make you can learn about moped wiring and if you're able to bring your bike we might be able to help you diagnose your issues if you pay the shop that lets us host the class the $20 day rate.

That’d be awesome! It’s about an hour away, so depending on my work schedule I might be able to make it. Thanks! Sounds like a lot of fun too!

Re: Electrical Nightmare

Listen,

Before I rewired that entire bike with new wiring I would go over it and check for rot and or abrasion under the rear fender and around the steering neck.

If all looks good then trim off old ends strip back copper about 1/4 to 3/8". Now look at copper wiring on new ends. Is it green or black from corrosion or heat?

If so strip some more back until you get to clean copper. If wire is too short or toast then it will need that run of wire replaced.

You can buy these connection blocks at most electronic supply houses for contractors. Mine was long enough to redo 3 mopeds.

In your picture the the wire cover needs trimmed back to relieve the wires pulling tight on connection blocks. Take scissors and carefully cut where indicated. Straight down one side, then carefully around outside of wires.

Wow, thanks for the illustration! I trimmed back off all the rot & inspected the wires where the metal bendy clips on the rear fender hold them in. On the terminal block I trimmed back some of them but I really didn’t want to cut them too short. My dad helped me redo them. He’s an electrical engineer & after he got his hands on it the taillight started working even though he didn’t change any of the connections. The headlight bulb was a dud so I’ve got another one in the mail that I’m gonna try out once it arrives. Hopefully it works after the work my dad did. If not I’m gonna draw out a wire diagram of the current setup & see if we can see anything weird on paper
