Freshly Rebuilt E50 with Leaky Seal!!!

Dan (high idle) Conway /

So... This maxi has been kicking my a** every step of the way. I rebuilt it due to an inconsistent idle and dying when the engine is hot occasionally at stops.

Tonight I went for a ride, the bike died on me, started back up and took me home, I then got home and sprayed carb cleaner into the flywheel while it ran and died immediately... Don’t say i’m screwing with the points by doing this i’m not spraying on the points side and after owning a dozen mopeds I can tell the difference between an engine bogging out vs lost spark.

I tried Moto seal around the outer seal of the crank seal with no luck, The seal is not popping out and is seated evenly... Only thing I can think of is the minuscule

amount of corrosion on the crank behind the seal, although this one is double lipped and there is no corrosion on the seat of the seal to the crank.

Sad Face. :(

AND it’s a new pricey Viton seal!!!

PS! The Lipped side is facing in like from the factory.

Re: Freshly Rebuilt E50 with Leaky Seal!!!

I had a new seal leak on a crankshaft .

The shaft seal contact surface was fine , with no apparent flaws .

I searched and found a seal with a one millimeter smaller inner diameter .

Problem disappeared . :)(edited)

Interesting. I have an extra seal i’m gonna pop in tomorrow after some “alone time” lol.

If that doesn’t work i’ll definitely check out the smaller seal.

If you have a link to the one you got i’d greatly appreciate it!!

Was that a masturbation joke?

Sorry , I don't have a link .

It was on a different bike , so I doubt the dimensions would be the same .

I would think that any good bearing /seal jobber would be able to fill that order .

I just ordered a 16 x 40 x 7 seal off of

ebay... now to wait til Tuesday

Re: Freshly Rebuilt E50 with Leaky Seal!!!

if questionable pitting/rust on crank sealing surface hit ot w some super fine paper, polish smooth.

Re: Freshly Rebuilt E50 with Leaky Seal!!!

Do u have a pic of the og crank seal with the gakset maker?

Blue locktie is a better idea. Did you clean the seal areas on the case?

You gotta post pictures man or we don’t know

I hear you guys, i’m not

home right now so I can’t take shots. I used motoseal... It’s the stuff you use to seal E50 case halves together same stuff as yamabond etc.

I can assure you it’s a tight putter seal.

I changed the seal to a lightly used spare I had yesterday, it made a slight difference but a leak appeared this morning.

I’m awaiting the seal that is 1mm smaller in hopes I don’t have to crack cases again.

If I do, i’ll probably just get the cheap needle crank from treats everyone loves.

I’ve had the Rito before, but can’t justify spending that on a bike i’m trying to keep stock.

What would happen if that seal was on backwards? Asking for a friend.

A double lipped seal would PROBABLY be okay. But they should be installed lips out

Re: Freshly Rebuilt E50 with Leaky Seal!!!

Lips in on the seals go like this.

Magneto ( crank ( clutch

Sprocket ) main gear
