1978 Puch Maxi High Torque downhill bump

Tony Erickson /

Hello All, just purchased a Puch (Lifelong Dream) ... so far everything has been going well but i have a concern that i cannot find any topics on. I know one of the Maxi's features is to use the engine to slow you down on hills, but my bike seems to bounce off the engine rather hard making a bit of metal on metal tinging. anyone know whats going on here. is this normal operation or is something possibly worn out???

thank you!!

Some "pinging" noise is OK, but if it's really, really loud, the wrist pin bushing may be worn causing piston slap. How many miles are on this bike?(edited)

i guess i just have no comparison to know what "really loud" is..

mileage is 1500 but the odometer went out due to the previous owner reinstalling the front tire with out fitting the brakes into the slot on the forks, the brake slopped around and broke the cable. he estimated 200 miles more since the break, so.. probably around 1700 miles..

i don't know much about the rig aside from he was using it, and he rebuilt the carbs.

Post picture of cylinder, pipe and carb, good chance that it’s been kitted, modified or neglected,

Your lifelong dream maybe become a nightmare ha ha, look up “Moped‘s ruined my life” in wiki ;)

Looks like stock cylinder but can’t see if it’s the stock exhaust

You may have to post video or audio of the sound you’re talking about !

Not a bad find for the price for nowadays !

Every green Puch Maxi Luxe that I’ve ever bought was a 1978 model. I’ll bet it’s a ‘78.

Just saw the VIN tag. Bingo, it’s a ‘78!(edited)

I hope the inside of that carb looks better than the outside.

So one problem was the clutch cable was way too tight barely letting the swing arm fall back to off. That helped some. Not so rattley now..
