Athena e50 erratic idle

Hi,

I was wondering if anything has any ideas.

I am working an e50 Athena with a 19 phbg and biturbo. The bike starts easily and will idle smooth for 5 seconds and then the idle will continuously increase until the bike cuts out.

I used carb cleaner to locate an air leak and did a leak down test and could not find any. I have a 48 idle jet and 96 main jet. Placing my fingers over the carb intake will decrease the idle. The bike dies if I give it more than half throttle when riding. The plugs are wet when I check.

Thanks

Reed kit or piston port kit? What cc?

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

70 cc reed kit

You have fuel flow issues. You're draining the bowl, hence why it is fine for 5 seconds, revs hi, then dies.

yeah, loosen gas cap, change fuel filter or add one, or...

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

Thanks. I removed the fuel filter and that fixed the problem with the erratic idle.

Now with idle, I have to keep the throttle open 1/4 or more or the bike will die. I tried turning the mixture and idle screw all the way in and leanest setting on the needle with only a slight improvement.

Idle jet is too rich?

That and your not jetted in every circuit (1/8-1/4-1/2-3/4 and full throttle) of your carburetor, Enjoy tuning and get back to us in this summer/fall 2020 and let us know if you finally got it dialed in

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

ahhh, its gotta be your choke circuit that plunger not closing all the way. id take it all apart and clean/blow all the passages out, sometimes theres shavings floating around... run a new fuel filter.

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

Yup, I agree. Fuel flow, carb and jetting issues. Take your whole carb apart clean it familiarize yourself with it and reassemble/replace psrts. Then you know your starting with a functional carb. Check for leaks again and jet. It sounded originally like you were staying the bowl to quickly. But there seems to be other issues all carb/fuel related. Good luck.

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

erratic idle is one thing but eric idle as a rat, is another!

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

Wanted to give an update and looking for more advice.

I changed the idle jet to 45 and the bike idles great.

Now my issue seems to be electrical.

The bike starts easily with bright lights. The bike takes off strong and pulls hard for 400 feet. The clutch engages. When I let off the throttle, the lights will dim and the bikes has poor power and wants to die when give throttle and the temperature goes up quickly > 300 degrees. A lot of white smoke coming from the pipe.

Condenser? Points?

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

I did another leak down test - given 6 psi and goes down to 3 psi at 6 minutes.

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

Could be a clutch side crank seal

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

Would that explain the lights?

Should I check the type F for gas?

The brightness of the lights is usually tied the the RPM of the motor

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

The light issue was a shorting out bulb. I have that fixed now.

Crack the case and replace the seals?

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

I pulled the clutch and it was leaking from the clutch side seal. It appears that the last time the seals were replaced, only the sprocket and stator seals were replaced

Re: Athena e50 erratic idle

problem fixed about replacing all of the seals and bearings
