<~noob how do I find the right die size?

Re: Well shit

Should be a metric size and count the threads in one half inch. Take the old nut to the Ace Hardware or other and let them check it. Make sure you get someone that knows bolts and nuts.

A person needs a metric set of taps and dies in their garage, along with SAE ones too.

Re: Well shit

Or , you could clean the crank end up with a set of jewelers files .

It requires patience .

Then see about a proper nut .

A thread gauge would help .

100% should be able to use a file to clean than up

Re: Well shit

by the picture something weird going on. there are two sets of threads, the original coarse and a tiny bit of fine.

post your moped brand, most are m8 x 1.25. ignore those fine threads at the beginning there are plenty of og thread on crank.

id pop the fly wheel off, cut a m8x 1.25 nut in half, clean n clamp the two halves onto thread and back out

to clean. file as necessary. post results.

79 puch magnum. The nut is toast. I have a new one. Just need to get the crank to thread. Currently just spins.

Re: Well shit

Go to the store and buy a 10x1.0 die!

Lowe’s sell them they are cheap like $10 bucks.

You should have plenty of thread still to grab

Re: Well shit

I've been unsuccessful finding a 10x1.0 tap or die other than special order. Nuts are hard to find as well. Bicycle stuff is that thread and was able to use some axle nuts for a flywheel nut.

Re: Well shit

ACE Hardwares have a good selection of metric nuts and bolts. As most of my petcocks are 10 x 1.0, I often take them there to verify size. The issue that could arise is if the needed nut is reverse threaded...

Re: Well shit

By the pic it is not reverse threads. I'm surprised that bicycle nuts would fit.(edited)

Thanks for die size. Now let's see if I can find one.

McMaster-Carr ships really fast. You can buy the die that you need and an M6-1 tap and die that you will need sooner or later for cleaning up stripped case threads and screw ends.

got this set coming today. How do I make sure the threads i make on the top of that crank match the lower threads?

That looks like a nice set .

Matching threads is exactly why I keep a set of jewelers files on hand .

Work the threads from good to bad , until the bad are good .

Not to mention , files are a lot cheaper , take a lot less room and get the job done in the time it takes to order a burger . ;)

Victory! What a pain in the ass. Had to tip bike on its side and use all my body weight. But it's done. Threads look good. Tapped the old bolt while I was at it too.

Thanks everyone for the deets
