E50 won't idle (unless throttle is held open)

Wesley Ambrosini /

Beating my head on this thang

Same top end and carb/intake ran on my za

15mm Bing

78 jet

Treats 50cc kit

Biturbo

Spark is great

Points are cleaned

Timed with the "paper" method to around 16mm btdc

.016 gap

New condenser

New-ish seals

Fresh gaskets

What's the deal?

Starts right up but doesn't idle. Tried jets from 70-80

Can the clutch-n- bell fuck with it? It's the only thing I haven't dug in on.

Idle screw*

If I crank the idle screw it will idle nice and high and run longer, but once it drops below a certain RPM it will die.

I tore down the clutch and put it back together, nothing weird, all the parts are there.

All the easy stuff has been checked and double checked, so I'm looking for more off the wall shit to check out

Re: E50 won't idle (unless throttle is held open)

Hmm easy things off the top of my head:

when timing remember that e50 rotates clockwise rather than counter clockwise like ZA

starter clutch plate drag can totally kill idle. When the bike is turned off and up on the center stand, if you rotate the magneto by hand and the drive sprocket also rotates, even a little, then you likely have improper spacing in the clutch basket.

Re: E50 won't idle (unless throttle is held open)

Maybe the carb is still dirty .

Idle passages and jets have to be pristine in order to do what they are suppose to do .

Don't forget all the air passages have to be clear .

Let's fucking go!

This might be it, it's dragging a shit ton

Gonna check my shimming and try not to forget e50 transmissions need love too!

Well the transmission is gonna need a bunch of work

Aftermarket crank + random clutch parts + I didn't do the rebuild = a lotta work

Re: E50 won't idle (unless throttle is held open)

Yeah some of the aftermarket cranks have slightly different spacing where the circlip grooves are cut in. I recently had to take the bottom of a starter clutch plate to a belt sander to remove a few mm because I could not otherwise get enough spacing, even with the smallest shims.
