Garelli VIP won’t kick start

August Adams-Miller /

Ped is a 1980 Garelli VIP 2 speed. I have a MLM exhaust on it. I’ve never been able to start this ped without furiously pedaling down a hill on the stand. When I pull the clutch in to kick start there’s not a strong resistance on the pedals like other mopeds. Once it starts it runs and idles great. Any idea why it won’t kickstart?

Re: Garelli VIP won’t kick start

When u grab the starter lever and the motor spins over the compression is not really felt too much because of the vip being a two speed, making it fairly easy to pedal.

afa starting, a tune up should get u to not pedal like mad. hows the mlm?

I love the MLM, worth every penny imo. Top speed is around 35 on flat now.

I was doing 38 with one of these

And a phbg 19 carb and intake. I wonder how fast it would be with a carb and intake?

Re: Garelli VIP won’t kick start

Maybe low compression .

How many pounds compression does the motor have ?

How can I check this? I have no idea how many lbs of compression.

Re: Garelli VIP won’t kick start

You need a compression tester .

Remove the spark plug .

Insert the tester .

Quickly rotate the motor numerous times , with the throttle wide open .

Read gauge .

Report here .
