Gas tank cleaning

john cervini /

I need to clean a magnum tank. It has a little rust but the bigger issue is black hard dried old gas/oil. I remember hearing something about pinesol but wanted some other options. Thanks!

One or 2 handfuls of 1/2" or 1" drywall screws, shaken not stirred. Pour a few ounces of mineral spirits in there while you're shaking. Rinse, then use some evaporust, rinse again, and fill with premix.

None of that is needed , unless there's more rust than metal .

obviously you remove them when your'e done? i've done this to a dozen tanks, really not hard shaking 99% of them out and using a magnet for the last few.

Re: Gas tank cleaning

Use an old piece of bike chain instead of loose nuts and bolts. Much easier to fish out.

Re: Gas tank cleaning

Or you can go to a paint shop throw a guy $20 and he might let you put sand blasting hose down in there and it would look like inside of new moped tank after.

Re: Gas tank cleaning

I have a few old dog leash chains I toss I the tank and swish around with gas. Works realy well. Easy to just dump out after.

I ended up using Pine Sol. I used 2:1 ratio of pine Sol and water. Let it soak for 3 days. No agitation or scrubbing. Dumped and rinsed this morning then dried with a hairdryer. Amazing results. Perfectly clean with zero flash rust!

If you have any Pine Sol left over, my mom used to use it to clean the crap stains off the inside of the toilet bowl. Worked and smelled great!
