Tomos shakes when I let off throttle

Erwin Schrodinger /

There's no shaking on when I'm accelerating or cruising, but when I let off the throttle and start to slow down, my bike shakes noticeably. Makes turns not fun. What could it be? Thinking the chain maybe.

Re: Tomos shakes when I let off throttle

Determine where it is coming from and we can help more for sure. Do some reading in the wiki on your tomos and the specific engine. Check out Fred's guide on basic moped maintenance and repair.

Your chain should not have more than 1/2 inch of play in it, so if it does, then start there. Just loosen the rear axel nuts and use the chain tensioner weird dish things to pull the wheel back a little and tighten the chain up. Just do it recently on each side so everything stays straight.

If it is internal, then there will be some more work with opening up the transmission. Super easy tho so dont be scared.

It’s a tomos what fuck do you expect

Re: Tomos shakes when I let off throttle

is it your wheels/brakes?

If it isn't an external chain or wheel bearing, wheel bolt.

Then it would be the one way clutch bearing or the kickstarter cage inside the counter gears or a needle cage inside the main drive gear.

Re: Tomos shakes when I let off throttle

Not that it will help the shake , but , you should slow before the turn , then power through it . ;)

This guy with race dynamics theory. Ha!

Race ??? It's just the way it should be done , anytime .

And , no theory . Simply practical knowledge from personal application .

It's a matter of staying in control . ;)

As for the shake , maybe tear the motor apart and balance it . (edited)

Re: Tomos shakes when I let off throttle

When all else fails, balance your front wheel and check your wheel alignment. (edited)

While it seems straightforward and sensible for us...

Once this snow clears, I'll try tightening up the chain and seeing if that helps. What should I be looking for in my transmission if that doesn't help?

I doubt it, because it's more of a forward/backward than side-to-side wobble, and there's no reason it would just go away on throttle if it were my wheels, I would think. And it happens while coasting, not just while braking.

That's what happens when a wheel is out of round . Up / down might seem like forward / backward .

And , more speed tends to even the 'low' spots , making it feel more round / normal . (edited)

Gotcha. I have mags, but I'll have a closer look.

Re: Tomos shakes when I let off throttle

Just drain the oil and open up the transmission.

Your tranny most likely had ATF in it which is typically red. So when you dump it, take not of the color. If it is dark then it is just old and burnt up a bit, no biggie. If it is cloudy, then some water got into your case some how, very not good. If it has a silvery shimmer and is thick then you have lots of metal shavings in it which is some part of the engine wearing out. A little can be expected, but a lot and if it is chunky is definitely not good.

You can also empty it into a container with a mesh cloth over it to see if you catch any bits for easy identification.

When you open up the tranny, if ther is a problem it should be pretty easy to spot.

I have ridden a bike that had bent mags. And I definitely noticed it more when slow, but it was such an obvious bend that you can see it with your eye easily.

I just changed the ATF the other day, but I didn't get a good look at it. After it was sitting in the container for a while, it seemed like there was a darker layer at the bottom, so maybe some burned up and separated out.

Re: Tomos shakes when I let off throttle

Grab the rear wheel and try to push it side to side. Worn out swing-arm bushings and distance tube aren't uncommon since nobody every thinks to grease them.
