Hand brake launch lever kinda

So I came up with a way to stop my swinging engine from variating at any point in the range,

A way that never can downshift (only a launch lever can do that..), but only stops variation at some point until you release the lever. I wondered how cool it would be to use, compared to a foot lever.

Might be very neat to use at top speeds.

So here we go.

Gonna use a piece of flat steel bar, and a bicycle disc brake caliper.

Steel bar will slide thru the caliper during variation (being attached to the swinging engine) , and can be locked at any point by squeezing the lever. I even think one could slightly slow variation by partially depressing the brake lever in a controlled fashion.

This sounds pretty cool to me, I've only seen one guy do a dual throttle style launch lever that pulled an engine up into full variation, was pretty cool.

But this is different.

Kinda psyched to try it

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Like a drag control on a fishing reel. The fish can only take the line as fast or far as you allow.

Then you realize your reels crank is missing and you can't get the fish in the boat till your reach the stop sign.

Cool though.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Sounds like a hill hold clutch mechanism. Only works from wherever you started at, and you only get one shot unless you reset.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

But the launch lever will still be attached,

In case of reset.

But by stopping variation your revs should increase to max from whatever point you stop it, unless climbing where you need downshift

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Interesting. Kind of makes the need to hold a launch lever "just so" a whole lot less important.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

rather then the complication of a sliding brake, can you see any way to add mechanical advantage to the lever system to directly increase variator spring tension.

essentially pulling opposite of variation.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

That's not what I want.

I want an engine gearing freeze

How in the world is this system complicated?

It's one steel bar on a swivel going through a brake caliper(edited)

I understand you, JBOT

I understand you.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Once my cat dies, I'm gonna get to this.

Can't do mopeds during hospice. :(

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

i get it. it's a little "hand" that holds a bar attached to the swinging motor. it's smart. i bet if you do it, it will be cool.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Just a different take on controlling bounce and variation

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Would you want to hook it up to a hand lever or something that you can push down with your foot and then release. Something like the rear brake or shift lever on a motorcycle?

Sounds like a cool idea and would love to see it built up.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

I'd rather do it by hand, as foot control is less precise when you have pedals instead of pegs

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

What about a foot lever that u can flip forward (vs the typical back or down motion)

So you can "lock" the gearing in up top as welll as down low.

Im gonna make one using a dirtbike kickstart or shift lever style hinge to allow it to flip.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

why not use a hydraulic clutch slave to move the engine? might have to do some rube goldberg shit to make the throw long enough, but if anyone would spend the time on that it would be you.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

I already said what I was gonna do.

You do your idea, I'll do mine.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

You posted on a public form (clearly to get insight or comments)

No need to get hurt feelings.

You do yours and ill do mine sounds like something a 2nd grader may say. The equivalent of nah nah na boo boo

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Fuck you, stupid ass.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Hey JBOT, Just an idea that I have seen for whatever it's worth.

Jesse James(PsyclomoteurMontreal) used a puch left side controller with the clutch engagement lever. He attached a brake cable to the clutch lever and then to the engine as his launch lever.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Got a link?

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

I don't think he posts here often but I will ask him for some photos

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

I PM'd him just now.. will post a pic as soon as he sends it to me

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

variator brake. sounds legit. dead simple. hell yeah.

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Next stop, transbrake.

Jbot,, are u talking about using a mechanical caliper like so?

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Sure, that would work.

I do have a hydraulic one around here somewhere.

Lots of goped calipers too.

Whichever seems to fit best

Won't need a very good one as the forces applied won't be too much

Good! I mailed it with the lever, cable and rotor in a flat rate. It grips like a champ. Plus it's tiny moped linkage size.

Check it out or chuck it ouT

Re: Hand brake launch lever kinda

Oh geez butt buddy,

You don't have to send me stuff.

I've got so much stuff already.

You big nut :)

Yea, we wanna see some action with it! Sorry about your cat.

I need the rest of the wheels for an air tank, so it was getting parted out. The little 2 stroke motor on it, I'm looking for a curb side power wheels in decent shape to chain it to and use the rear mechanical brake for that. Ya know so fuck this goped thing. Anyhoo, hacka to iT nd sea wth happuns!¿
