Puch Maxi Metra 65

Hey!

Bought a couple of things for my maxi a while ago (65 Metra cylinder (the new one), 15 SHA carb, tecno racing exhaust, hard clutch springs, "racing" DMP crankshaft, matched the ports of the cases to the cylinder). Ran the thing on stock 16 45 gearing, but I was rather dissapointed with the power I got. I woudlnt say it was extremely powerful, it lacked low end pull and coudlnt go past 40 mph.

So I said to myself, being an inexperienced little brat, lets get into some books, and try to really tune this bastard. Ended up reading alot of Graham Bell.

The first video of my little project is on youtube, but its basically me building the engine as I described, nothing too interesting or to involved really, maybe fine for watching while you sip your afternoon coffee...

my vid :)

The interesting part is yet to come.

Just to hype you up a little bit, here are some pictures. Im gonna take a closer look at compression, port timing, exhaust dimensions, intake header length and crankshaft balance factor.

You didn’t say anything about timing and clutch tuning,

A high timed engine will run very hot and seize Even if it’s jetted perfectly, you got to tune your clutch so you will have good takeoff in the powerband

And you have to jet carburetor while in the powerband not jet before because of untuned clutch engaging too soon when you have a low vacuum signal at low rpm because you’ll have a small jet size to have OK takeoff and then when you get into powerband you’ll be lean and run hot too,

65cc is bigger than 50cc with same cooling fins size so what I just stated with the tuning has to be followed perfectly or you’re going to overheat again

Re: Puch Maxi Metra 65

I'll follow anyone with a drill bit rack as stocked as that.

Re: Puch Maxi Metra 65

I agree with roff. With that gearing you should be wheelie city on a Metra. Get tour clutch tuned up. Retart that timing a touch. Dont blow up.

Ha!

Re: Puch Maxi Metra 65

As if you knew what was going to happen!

Should be revealed in a vid soon, but my clutch bite the dust 🤣...

Revved the thing and the clutch plate twisted, pushed the shoes outwards (towards the bell cover) and just binded the whole thing...

This is a rather big bummer, but dont worry, a good solution is at hand!

I happen to be a good friend of a guy here in Slovenia, who lends racing 125cc Rotax gokarts... He was so fed up with the clutch b*llshit he had to deal with, he designed his own VERY simple design, which lasts, is cheap to make etc...

Will be designing a new clutch for my Maxi :)

More on this soon, but in the following three days im (hopefully) getting my driving license, so no fun till that is done...

Re: Puch Maxi Metra 65

Hahahahahah made my day :))

Re: Puch Maxi Metra 65

Thanks for all the comments everyone...

as you know, there are always holdups and stickups in builds like these, it will be the 3rd time I have put the engine back together soon (since I have this cylinder ofcourse 🤣).

So once again thanks!

Ljubljana is such a cool city, wish I had had the opportunity to spend more time there. Was in Koper a few years ago doing moped things with Tomos. Was really impressed with every aspect of Slovenia. Would go eat Istrian Fuži but the water over pretty much anything.

Make a new thread for the clutch

Wow, beautiful photo indeed.

Yes, Slovenia has had alot of 2 stroke pingle and dingle around some time ago.

Lets not debate the sad state of everything now, Tomos died away :(...

But there are alot of 2stroke tuners around here (or at least were). Some of the beautiful culture of engine tweaking still exists.

P.S. In Slovenia there is this really stupid limit which was imposed, 25km/h (or 15mph), or you have to have a driving license. Police cracked down on us riders, giving enourmous fines and taking bikes off the streets...

But around the coast area, every single moped is registered to 15mph, and almost all of them are capable of 50+... a beautiful sight! :))
