Arcing is the term used to describe the act of electrons jumping through a gap between conducting surfaces creating a spark.

The term arcing is typically in reference to ignition points. In this case, such arcing is indicative of a problem -- typically a faulty condenser. Points arcing result in poor timing and pitting on the points.
