A speedometer measures the instantaneous speed of a vehicle.

Traditional moped speedometers are driven by a flexible, sleeved cable that is rotated by a set of small gears in the front wheel.

Ever been riding along and all of a sudden your speedometer doesn't work any more. check the cable, nope cable is good. check the drive gear on the wheel, nope that's ok too. must be the speedometer. most have a known issue where the grease on the cable shaft heats up in the sun and turns to a hard goop, seizing the shaft and more often than not, destroying the cable. my Huret did and here is how to fix that.

you will need the following tools:
a flat screw driver
adjustable wrench
a pair of pliers
5mm socket and driver
first you need to remove the speedometer from wherever it mounts. I won't go into that here as there are too many variables. the first 2 pics show mine removed. find a nice quiet workspace somewhere and grab a cold one.
now remove the rubber weather seal in pic 3.

now take your screw driver and carefully pry the tabs and remove the bezel and crystal from the unit. set them aside somewhere safe. now remove the retaining nut on the back and separate the unit from the housing. it not necessary or recommended that you remove the needle from the front as this will require recalibrating the unit. just set the housing aside for now.

now using the 5mm socket, separate the entire face from the unit being careful not to lose or damage the drive gear. at this point, there will be 2 little retaining pins holding the base to the unit, do not destroy them as they will act as guide pins during reassembly. using your screw driver carefully separate the base from the unit. now you can clean up the shaft and the base, add your favorite grease and begin reassembly in the reverse order.

finni, time for that cold one.
